Cate Blanchett is in talks to star opposite  Bradley Cooper in Guillermo del Toro‘s Nightmare Alley.

Multiple outlets report that A-lister is in negotiations to join the Oscar-winning director’s adaptation of the 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham. This isn’t the first time the story is being adapted for the big screen — it was previously made into a film in 1947 starring actor Tyrone Power.

Del Toro will direct the pic from a script he co-wrote with Kim Morgan. The film is also produced and financed by del Toro and J. Miles Dale with TSG Entertainment.

Nightmare Alley follows a young con-man who joins a traveling carnival and finds himself teaming up with a female psychiatrist who is even more corrupt than he is. Things get complicated when she ends up out-manipulating the manipulator.

Nightmare Alley is Oscar winner del Toro’s follow-up to The Shape of Water, which won Best Picture. The film is Cooper’s first role since A Star is Born.
