]]>Disney has been on a mission to create live-action adaptations of its classics, with the story of the wooden puppet hitting cinemas on September 8.
Plans to remake the 1940 animation were first announced in 2015, but a series of changes behind the scenes meant that filming only began in March 2021. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory director, Sam Mendes, and Paddington filmmaker, Paul King, were both attached to helm the movie at one point, yet Robert Zemeckis is the man who has eventually brought the story to life.
It was also Zemeckis’s long working relationship with Tom Hanks that led to the Oscar winner playing Gepetto. The pair has previously collaborated on Forrest Gump, Cast Away, and The Polar Express. Hanks had dropped out of the project when King left, but rejoined after reaching out to his frequent collaborator.
The Pinocchio teaser trailer introduces audiences to the elderly woodcarver, Cynthia Erivo’s Blue Fairy, and the CGI Jiminy Cricket who will be voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Notably missing is Pinocchio himself, with it seeming as though we will have to wait to see the titular character.

Disneyland, “The Happiest Place on Earth”, opened in Anaheim in the summer of 1955. Disney parks were later built in Florida, Paris, and all around the world, but the California one is the only Disney theme park constructed under Walt Disney.
The theme parks attractions including Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, and The Jungle Cruise have inspired movies. Additionally, some of the most popular film franchises have created themed areas like Star Wars’ Galaxy’s Edge and Marvel’s Avengers Campus.
This isn’t Disney’s first attempt at documenting Walt Disney’s life. In 2003, Tom Hanks was hired by the studio to portray Disney in “Saving Mr. Banks”, a biographical drama about Disney and his journey to land rights to Mary Poppins. The movie was nominated for an Oscar and grossed almost $118 million worldwide, according to Variety.
Dana Brunetti, Jason Reed, and Matt DelPiano will serve as producers. Jessica Matthews will serve as executive producer.

]]>Variety reports that Disney is considering putting off the movie’s release once more due to the ongoing health crisis. As movie theaters are reopening, recent releases have shown relatively weak performances. The much anticipated Tenet, for example, made an underwhelming $29.5 million on its domestic run so far. This causes studios to rethink anticipated blockbuster releases, with Wonder Woman 1984 recently delayed to Christmas.
As Black Widow represents a big investment by Disney, it is unlikely that the studio would want to risk an opening during the November slot. Mulan was released on Disney+ instead of getting a theatrical release and now Pixar’s Soul may get the same treatment. It doesn’t seem, however, that Black Widow will go this way. This may have a ripple effect that will push back future MCU movies’ releases.
