]]>Taraji P. Henson is developing a spinoff series centering around her Empire character Loretha “Cookie” Lyon at Fox, as part of a two-year-first look deal she signed with 20th Century Fox Television.
Details about the series haven’t been released yet, other than it “follows what’s next for Cookie,” and that it should be ordered to pilot. Henson will star and produce the untitled show.
Empire co-creator Danny Strong is writing the series alongside Stacy A. Littlejohn and Yolonda Lawrence, with Sanaa Hamri to direct.
Empire was created by Danny Strong and Lee Daniels, and it aired for six seasons before ending earlier this year. Henson and Daniels have been teasing a spinoff with Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney saying, “I don’t know what that is and I’m not a part of it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone was trying to work on something.”
Henson’s portrayal of Cookie earned her three Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe in 2016.

“I think there’s more to do with these characters, and I’m heartbroken we aren’t getting to shoot the finale we wanted – at least not yet. But you know what they say in television? Stay tuned! To the Empire!” said Lee in a statement.
Co-creator Danny Strong echoed his statement and expressed his hope that they’ll be able to give this series its proper conclusion one day by filming the ending they planned from the beginning, and that they all loved.

]]>According to Billboard, Mario will portray Devon, a character described by the Fox “an earnest, up-and-coming R&B singer who supports his ailing sister.” Devon will find himself in the middle of a bidding war between Empire label and Lyon Family Management, with both companies desperate to sign him.

When it comes to television, he had a guest role on Love That Girl! in 2014.
Mario decided to make a comeback in the music world and is about to release his first album since 2009. The record, titled Dancing Shadows, represents his fifth studio effort.

]]>“Empire is as compelling, emotional and unpredictable as it ever was” said Fox entertainment president Michael Thorn in a statement. “We are so proud of our amazing cast, led by Terrence and Taraji, who deliver powerful performances week after week. We’d also like to thank our tremendous creative team — Lee, Danny, Brett, Ilene, Sanaa, Brian, and Francie — whose inspired storytelling continues to create the unforgettable, jaw-dropping OMG moments that have always been signature to Empire.”
Created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, Empire premiered in 2015 to strong ratings and positive reviews from the critics. The series revolves around a hip-hop and entertainment company and follows the drama that unfolds when the company’s founder has to choose his successor. It stars Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Bryshere Y. Gray, Jussie Smollett, and Trai Byers among others.
The first season of the series had 17.33 million viewers on average, while the second season averaged 15.73 million. The third and fourth season saw a big decline in ratings, with the last episode, which aired on April 25, attracting only 5.34 million viewers. Despite all of this, Empire is still the networks second most watched television program among 18-49 demographic.
Besides Empire, Fox also renewed shows 911, The Gifted, The Orville and The Simpsons. The fate of Empire’s sister series Star is yet to be determined.
