After a lot of rumors and speculations about the potential Harry Potter revival, things are finally official. HBO Max is plotting a decade-long adaptation of the beloved book series, with the author J.K. Rowling coming on board as executive producer.

This series will be developed as an exclusive original for the newly launched streaming service Max, which merges HBO Max with Discovery+. The project officially got a green light during a recent Warner Bros. Discovery press conference, and it’s been described as a faithful adaptation with a brand-new cast.

J.K. Rowling will executive produce the project alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts, and she’s excited to invite a whole new generation of fans into the Harry Potter universe.

“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series,” said Rowling in a statement.

Seven bestselling Harry Potter books sold around 600 copies worldwide, and they’ve already been adapted into a successful movie franchise. The Harry Potter films led by Daniel Radcliffe grossed $7.7 billion worldwide, while the spinoff franchise Fantastic Beasts ended up earning $1.8 billion across three films.

Harry Potter is coming to television, but not in the way most fans would hope. HBO Max recently confirmed plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone with a quiz show based on the fantasy franchise and a retrospective special.

The quiz show will feature Harry Potter superfans competing in a series of trivia challenges. It will be divided into four episodes and is set to include appearances from special guests. The casting call is already opened at WizardingWorld.com, while HBO Max is also planning an online “play-along component” for viewers at home.

After the quiz show wraps up, the streamer will air a retrospective special produced by Casey Patterson. Further details about the special are yet to be revealed.

“To celebrate the dedicated fans old and new who have passionately kept the Wizarding World magic alive in so many forms for decades, these exciting specials will celebrate their Harry Potter fandom in a must-see multiplatform TV event,” said Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics president Tom Ascheim in a statement.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released in 2001 and served as the first entry in the Harry Potter film franchise, which is based on the books by J. K. Rowling. The movie was a huge hit earning more than $1 billion at the box office. At the time, it was the second-highest-grossing feature in the history of cinema.

The quiz and special might not be the only projects HBO Max has in store for Harry Potter fans. According to multiple reports, the streamer entered the early stages of development for a live-action TV series based on the world of Harry Potter. Details about it are scarce, but it is believed that the company is already recruiting writers to develop the idea further.

After rumors have been flooding the wizarding world, it looks like a Harry Potter series is finally happening.

A Harry Potter series is in very early development at HBO Max. No writers or talent have been attached to the project, but sources say conversations between multiple writers on a potential series have taken place. There’s also no word on the focus of the series and what part of the Harry Potter timeline would be featured.

At this time, no deals have been made, which was echoed by HBO Max and Warner Bros. in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.”

The Harry Potter book series is one of the most popular of all time, with all seven books in the series selling over 500 million copies worldwide. The books were adapted into an eight-film franchise, which grossed almost $8 billion worldwide. So far, there have been two films in the prequel spinoff Fantastic Beasts, with a third of five scheduled for a 2022 debut.

The news to develop shows within the Harry Potter world is not surprising as streaming wars have been taking place between companies. Disney announced tons of shows set within the Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, and Pixar Animation worlds and HBO Max has multiple DC Comics shows in the works.
