The streamer has dropped the first trailer for Murphy’s debut series for Netflix. The seven-episode limited series, set to launch May 1, was described by Murphy as “a love letter to the Golden Age of Tinseltown.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hollywood follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-World War II Hollywood as they try to make it in Tinseltown, no matter the cost. Each character offers a unique glimpse behind the gilded curtain of Hollywood’s Golden Age, spotlighting the unfair systems and biases across race, gender and sexuality that continue to this day.

Hollywood stars a star-studded cast that includes Darren Criss, Dylan McDermott, Jim Parsons, Queen Latifah, and Patti LuPone.

Multiple outlets confirm that Samara Weaving, Jeremy Pope, Laura Harrier, and David Corenswet have joined the cast of Murphy’s first project under his overall deal with the streamer, Hollywood.

They join the previously cast Jim Parsons, Dylan McDermott, Maude Apatow, Joe Mantello, Laura Harrier, and Jake Picking. Also starring are Patti LuPone, Holland Taylor, and Darren Criss.

Little is known about the limited drama series. When originally announced the prolific producer called the project “a love letter to the Golden Age of Tinseltown.” 

According to The Wrap McDermott has been cast as a character named Ernie, Weaving will play Claire, Parsons is set as Henry Wilson, Apatow will play Henrietta, Mantello has the role of Dick, Harrier will play Camille and Picking will portray actor Rock Hudson.

Netflix announced the news Friday.

Criss announced the exciting news, that he’ll be starring and exec producing Hollywood Sunday via social media.

“Honored to say that I’m heading back to the House of Murphy where I’ll be starring in but also executive producing HOLLYWOOD with Time’s King of Television,” he wrote.

“Late last year, [Ryan Murphy] and I had dinner where he shared that he wanted to do a period piece that was young and optimistic. We landed on the idea of a series covering several narratives from 1940s Hollywood. We both left that evening feeling super excited about its potential. Two days later Netflix bought it. Not only is that a testament to the magic of Ryan Murphy, it’s a reminder of the kind of thing that can only happen in Hollywood…literally.”

Criss previously collaborated with Murphy on Glee, American Horror Story, and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Hollywood is set to debut on the streaming giant May 2020.

Multiple outlets report that the Glee, American Horror Story and American Crime Story executive producer has inked a massive overall deal with Netflix. So massive that according to sources the deal is in the high eight figures.

The writer-producer Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes who also recently made the move, opting for Netflix rather than a traditional studio. 

Under the deal, Falchuk will develop, write, produce and direct new series for Netflix through his Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision banner.

“I have spent my career creating shows that bounce between different genres and tones and I plan on continuing to develop and create programing that spans a wide variety of worlds and formats,” Falchuk said. “During my first meeting with Netflix, they told me – just bring us stories you’re passionate about and we will find a way to help you tell them. That level of support and freedom is inspiring to me.”

Falchuk’s deal with 20th Century Fox Television expires June 1.

Multiple outlets confirm that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has reversed its decision to hand out four awards during commercial breaks. The decision to relegate the awards for Cinematography, Editing, Make-Up and Hairstyling, and Live Action Short awards was voted on by the Academy’s membership was canceled following major backlash from a slew of Hollywood A-listers including Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro and more.

Academy president John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson issued a statement that reads ,“The Academy has heard the feedback from its membership regarding the Oscar presentation of four awards – Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling. All Academy Awards will be presented without edits, in our traditional format. We look forward to Oscar Sunday, February 24.”

The 91st Academy Awards take place Sunday February 24, at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, California.
