“Lipstick Lover” has been released as the album’s lead single, and the singer described it as an “anthem inspired by f.a.m. for f.a.m.”, adding it’s an “oasis made with love, rooted in self-acceptance, throbbing in self-discovery.” She first previewed this song at her Met Gala after-party before officially sharing it with her fans.

“Lipstick Lover” perfectly encapsulates the tone of The Age of Pleasure, and she put a lot of effort into creating a space for herself and finding things that bring her pleasure on this creative journey.

“All the songs were written from such an honest space…I hope that people feel that when they listen to the music… I definitely have had an opportunity to evolve and grow and to tap into the things that bring me pleasure, the things that perhaps I should rethink and rework,” she told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe.

Monáe’s fourth studio album will be released on June 9 via Atlantic Records, and it will feature a total of 14 tracks.

Monáe is currently busy promoting her role in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, but most people still know her as a musician first.  It’s been four years since her latest album Dirty Computer came out, and she recently jokingly told NME she has new music on the way.

“Actually, you will! You will get new music because I now have a clone. That clone does all of my music, and I have another clone for acting. I’m not going to tell you if it’s me or not. They’re in the studio right now!” Monáe told NME.

Her silly answer seems to hold some truth because Atlantic Records’ CEO Craig Kallman recently revealed that she has new music coming out in 2023 and described it as “a gigantic celebration”.

Following the release of Grammy-nominated Dirty Computer in 2018, Monáe mostly turned to acting, starring in Harriet and Antebellum and leading the second season of the Amazon series Homecoming. Back in 2020, she released her first song in two years called “Turntables” and later recorded “Stronger” for the Netflix documentary We the People.

Monáe recently discussed her dream role with Empire and said it “would be a dream” to have Storm appear in the next Black Panther movie, being directed by Ryan Coogler.

“One of my dreams has always been to play Storm. A lot of women have played Storm and they’ve done an exceptional job, and I would love to be in that line of artists and get to do Storm justice,” said Monáe.

Monáe made her big-screen acting debut in the Oscar-winning film Moonlight and played one of the leading roles in the historical drama Hidden Figures that same year. She most recently appeared in the anthology series Homecoming and is soon set to star in the horror movie Antebellum.

It is unknown if season 1 stars of the psychological thriller, Stephan James and Bobby Cannavale will return for season 2.

Homecoming starts shooting its second season later this year.

The colorful visual for this song shows Monáe waking up on a rooftop after a crazy night with a group of friends, running away after spotting a security drone, and ending up in an underground party. They are also shown watching footage of current social issues before one of the characters is taken away by masked security officers.

The upcoming biopic will be based on Gloria Steinem’s best-selling memoir My Life on the Road. It’s been described as “the story of her itinerant childhood’s influence on her life as a writer, activist, and organizer for women’s rights worldwide.”

Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander and newcomer Lulu Wilson will portray this trailblazer during different stages of her life. Janelle Monáe is set to play fellow feminist legend and good friend Dorothy Pitman Hughes.

2018 has been a pretty crazy year for Monáe but in a completely different department. Her latest studio album Dirty Computer was a smash-hit and it even received Grammy Award for the biggest honor of the night – Album of the Year.

Harriet tells the tale of Tubman’s escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad in the face of growing pre-Civil War adversity.

Tony winner Cynthia Erivo will portray the legendary abolitionist and political activist in this exciting project, directed by Kasi Lemmons. Her previous credits include critically acclaimed dramas Eve’s Bayou and Talk to Me.

Harriet won’t be the first film on Monáe’s resume focusing on a legendary heroine who changed the course of history. In 2016, she appeared in the role of mathematician and aerospace engineer Mary Jackson in Hidden Figures. This film followed a team of female African-American mathematicians who worked at the NASA during Space Race.

Janelle Monáe will soon be seen on screen in drama Welcome to Marwen. It centers on a man who constructs a miniature World War II village, as a way of coping with violent assault he endured. It will come out on December 21, and also stars Steve Carell, Leslie Mann and Merritt Wever.
