]]>O’Farrell’s bestselling historical fiction novel “charts the emotional, familial and artistic consequences of loss” by telling the story of William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her only son, Hamnet.
O’Farrell is adapting the script alongside Zhao, who’ll direct the film for Amblin Partners, Hera Pictures, Neal Street Productions, and Book of Shadows, while Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, and Sam Mendes serve as producers.
Paul Mescal’s star has been on the rise since he got his big break with Normal People, and he’s fresh off the success of his Oscar-nominated turn in Aftersun. He has several exciting projects coming up, including Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated Gladiator sequel.
Jessie Buckley is best known for her Oscar-nominated turn in The Lost Daughter, and we’ve most recently seen her in Salah Polley’s Women Talking. She’ll next star alongside Riz Ahmed in the sci-fi romance Fingernails before reuniting with Olivia Colman in Wicked Little Letters.

]]>Based on the novel by Miriam Toews, Women Talking is set to be written and directed by Sarah Polley. According to its official synopsis, the movie centers on “a group of women in an isolated Mennonite religious colony in Bolivia as they struggle to reconcile their faith with a string of assaults committed by the colony’s men.”
In addition to Mara, Foy, and Buckley, Women Talking is also set to star Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, Michelle McLeod, and Ben Whishaw. August Winter, Liv McNeil, and Kate Hallett are set to make their feature film debuts in this project.
In addition to playing the lead role, McDormand will also produce the project via her Hear/Say Productions banner. Nomadland was also co-produced by this company, and she won the Oscar for best film as one of the producers, in addition to collecting the best lead actress award.

According to Deadline, this project will center on a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband.
Garland will join forces with A24, the same studio that gave him his big break with Ex Machina. The filmmaker’s sophomore film, Annihilation, came out in 2018. He also gave TV a try last year with the futuristic mystery mini-series Devs.
Jessie Buckley had a pretty amazing 2020, as well, and established herself as one of Hollywood’s biggest rising stars. She delivered a critically acclaimed performance in Charlie Kaufman’s Netflix original I’m Thinking of Ending Things and was singled out as a standout in the new season of Fargo.
