Ncuti Gatwa will enter the TARDIS in November. It was announced in May that the S-x Education actor would be taking over the titular role in Doctor Who, making him the 14th incarnation of the Time Lord.

Gatwa will be replacing Jodie Whitaker, who played the first female version of The Doctor. Whitaker has been in the role since 2017, with her final appearance set to be in the upcoming Doctor Who special that will air in October to celebrate the BBC’s Centenary.

According to reports, Gatwa will begin filming the show’s 14th season in November, though it is only expected to air in 2024.

However, audiences may grab a glimpse of the 29-year-old actor as The Doctor before then. It is believed that Gatwa will make his first appearance in the anticipated special scheduled for 2023 which will commemorate the 60th year of Doctor Who. David Tennant will reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor, with Neil Patrick Harris playing the villain.

Harris previously told Variety that Gatwa will “be the first gay Doctor, which is going to be super cool.” The Scottish actor is also set to be the first black actor to lead the series.

Jodie Whittaker is not leaving the TARDIS yet.

The 36-year-old actress is sticking around for the British science fiction series for at least another season. Whittaker earned widespread praise for her work on Doctor Who, especially her portrayal of the first female Doctor in the show’s 55-year history.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the first female Time Lord will return for the upcoming 12th season. Whittaker told the outlet exclusively, “I really can’t wait to step back in and get to work again. It’s such an incredible role. It’s been an extraordinary journey so far and I’m not quite ready to hand it over yet.”

While BBC is keeping under wraps who will play the Doctor in the upcoming season, it is largely presumed that Whittaker, who took on the role after Peter Capaldi’s exit, will stay on as the Doctor from Gallifrey.

According to the outlet, the opening episode of season 11 was the biggest season launch for the show with 10.9 million viewers in the UK.

The Season 11 finale of Doctor Who airs this Sunday. Season 12 is expected to start shooting in early 2019.

The next season of Doctor Who won’t air until late 2018, but there is already a big anticipation to see the Thirteenth Doctor in action. As you probably know, the next season will be the first one to have a female Doctor portrayed by Jodie Whittaker.

Recently BBC revealed some further details about the next series including members of the supporting cast. Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill are all set to become members of the show’s regular cast. Walsh will star as Graham (rumored to be Doctor’s companion), Cole will play Ryan and Gill will play a character named Yasmin. It was also revealed that the series will start filming in January, and will have ten weeks run with fifty-minute episodes.

“The new Doctor is going to need new friends.” said Chris Chibnall, the show’s new head writer and executive producer. “We’re thrilled to welcome Mandip, Tosin, and Bradley to the Doctor Who family. They’re three of Britain’s brightest talents and we can’t wait to see them dive into brand new adventures with Jodie’s Doctor. Alongside them, we’re delighted that Sharon D Clarke is also joining the show.”

The tenth series of Doctor Who, which finished airing in July 2017, was last for both showrunner Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi, who portrayed the Twelfth Doctor. After Capaldi’s announcement that he won’t return to the role of the Doctor, there were rumors that the favorites for the Thirteenth Doctor are Ben Whishaw, Kris Marshall, and Tilda Swinton among others. Eventually, in July 2017, the casting of Jodie Whittaker was announced, with the decision being warmly received by the fans. Whittaker made her first appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor in Christmas special Twice Upon a Time.
