]]>Directed by Call Me By Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino, Challengers chronicles the rise and fall of the former tennis protégé Tashi (Zendaya). A bright future was ahead of her before an injury derailed her career as a professional tennis player, forcing her to turn to coaching instead.
She poured all her energy into helping her husband Art (Mike Faist) become a Grand Slam champion. Once he finds himself in a rut, Tashi decides to sign him up for a low-level event to gain back his confidence, but it turns out he won’t get an easy win because his former best friend and Tashi’s ex Patrick (Josh O’Connor) is also playing.
R-rated original films usually struggle to make a mark at the box office, but that didn’t stop Challengers from serving up a win with a $15 million opening. In addition to topping the domestic box office, it earned $10 million outside of North America.
Challengers was initially slated for the world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year before shifting its release date to April 26, 2024, due to dual strikes in Hollywood.

]]>According to its official synopsis, Challengers is a high-stakes drama where pasts and presents collide and tensions run high. It centers on Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach, who makes no apologies for her game, on and off the court.
She’s on a quest to help her husband Art (Mike Faist) make a comeback after a losing streak, but his redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up tennis player Patrick (Josh O’Connor), who just happens to be his former best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend.
In addition to playing one of the lead roles, Zendaya will also produce the film alongside Luca Guadagnino, Rachel O’Connor, and Amy Pascal. Challengers marks her first lead movie role since Malcolm & Marie in 2021, and it will be released on September 15 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Zendaya will also return as Chani in Denis Villeneuve’s space epic Dune: Part Two later this year.

]]>LEE will be directed by Ellen Kuras and shine a light on the wartime experiences of Lee Miller, who gave up a glamorous career as a Vogue cover model to become a WWII photographer, in an attempt to chronicle the experiences of soldiers on the frontlines and expose the atrocities that took place in concentration camps.
Winslet said this project is “absolutely not a biopic” because exploring Lee’s whole life would require a deeper dive. It instead focuses on the period from 1938-1948 that took her to the trenches of the war and happens to be her most defining time.
“What we wanted to do was find the most interesting decade in her life, the one that defined who she was and what she became because of what she went through … That is the story we want people to know about Lee more than the many other parts of her life,” said Winslet in a statement.
Riseborough and Cotillard will play Audrey Withers and Solange D’Ayen, two women who knew Lee during her Vogue days. Law will portray the love of her life, artist Roland Penrose, while O’Connor is expected to take on the role of their son, Anthony Penrose.

]]>The story takes place in 1924 Beechwood, England where a maid in the Niven household named Jane Fairchild has the day off to celebrate Mother’s Day while Mr. and Mrs. Niven attend an event for the engagement of their neighbor’s son, Paul, to Emma Hobday. The Nivens’ sons were killed in the war and they’re excited to partake in the engagement party. Although Jane has no mother to visit, she still enjoys her day off. Jane was previously Paul’s lover for seven years, but this will be their last day as lovers. Paul, like the Nivens, is part of upper-class England and Jane was orphaned at birth. This Mother’s Day is the beginning of Jane’s new life.
“It truly felt like the planets aligned when this wonderful screenplay, ‘Mothering Sunday,’ somehow found its way to me,” Husson said in a statement. “Alice Birch seemed to whisper in my ear, and I felt everything I’d done so far prepared me for this specific story. It was a culmination of all that I am obsessed with in life: writing, sensuality, and pure cinema. I finished the script in tears, not from sadness, but because it cracked me open, like the most honest works do.”

]]>Landing the role of Prince Charles on the Netflix series came after years of vying for lead roles against some of the UK’s top actors. O’Connor, however, knew he had one thing going for him that others hadn’t — “I thought that they may well come to me because of my ears.”
O’Connor, 29, played the young version of Prince Charles in the third season of The Crown but he admits that at first, he was quite indifferent to the opportunity to star in the royal family hit series. But after preparing for the role, his first reaction — “What’s interesting about Prince Charles?” quickly changed to — “Now, I think he is incredible.”
O’Connor is also set to star as the Prince in the forthcoming season four of The Crown. It is unlikely he’ll stay on for the series time-hops for season five.
