Luca Guadagnino’s next film Challengers is taking us to the high-stakes world of tennis, and its first trailer set the stage for a complicated love triangle. Zendaya takes the lead as a former tennis prodigy turned coach who struggles to reconcile with her past while helping her husband prepare for his big comeback.

According to its official synopsis, Challengers is a high-stakes drama where pasts and presents collide and tensions run high. It centers on Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach, who makes no apologies for her game, on and off the court.

She’s on a quest to help her husband Art (Mike Faist) make a comeback after a losing streak, but his redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up tennis player Patrick (Josh O’Connor), who just happens to be his former best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend.

In addition to playing one of the lead roles, Zendaya will also produce the film alongside Luca Guadagnino, Rachel O’Connor, and Amy Pascal. Challengers marks her first lead movie role since Malcolm & Marie in 2021, and it will be released on September 15 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Zendaya will also return as Chani in Denis Villeneuve’s space epic Dune: Part Two later this year.
