Some of Snyder’s fans weren’t on board with the joke, but the director himself didn’t feel the same way. He recently told Men’s Health that he enjoyed Barbie and said that the Justice League joke was pretty good, adding it felt special to be referenced in this hit film.

In the trailer, there’s an epic battle between the Justice League and a new villain, big bad Darkseid (Ray Porter), who was supposed to be the main villain of the first cut of the film but wasn’t included in the final cut. The clip also shows a conversation between Jared Leto’s Joker and Ben Affleck’s Batman.

“We live in a society where honor is a distant memory,” The Joker says. “Isn’t that right, Batman?”

The film has Batman, Superman, (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) teaming to protect the world from the villains—Darkseid, Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds), and DeSaad (Peter Guinness), who want to destroy the planet.

The movie is a result of years of grassroots campaigns to get Warner Bros. to #ReleasetheSnyderCut after Snyder left Justice League in early 2017 to recover from a family tragedy as well as creative differences. The studio brought in Joss Whedon, director of Marvel Studios’ The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, to re-write and re-shoot the film.

Fans have been campaigning for years for DC Film’s Justice League to offer Zack Snyder’s cut of the film which saw Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg, and Superman share the same screen.

Snyder made the news on Wednesday during a live Q&A following a virtual screening of his Henry Cavill-led Superman film Man of Steel.

Snyder completed most of the work on Justice League before having to step away from post-production after a family tragedy. Warner Bros brought in Joss Whedon, helmer of The Avengers, to finish the project and many believe that Snyder envisioned a darker take on the film.

The film was reported to budget at $300 million and it grossed over $650 million worldwide, but was not popular among critics and was perceived as a miss.

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut was started by fans online and in November 2019, Wonder Woman star, Gal Gadot, kicked the campaign into overdrive by tweeting the hashtag with a grayscale still from the film and Affleck, Snyder, and Jason Momoa shortly followed.

The move comes after Warner Bros. replaced Jon Berg and Geoff Johns as the heads of DC films. While Berg joins Roy Lee (The Lego Movie) as a production partner, Johns will remain DC’s president and chief creative officer, while providing creative guidance for the movie division.

“Walter is creative, resourceful, and committed to excellence, and will bring those qualities to his oversight of our superhero films,” said Warner Bros Group president Toby Emmerich. “He’s a terrific production executive and served as an executive producer on two of the summer’s most popular films, New Line’s It and Annabelle: Creation. I’m confident Walter and Geoff, working with our filmmaking partners, will deliver films that will resonate with both broad global audiences as well as DC fanboys and fangirls. Walter’s a great addition to the Warner Bros Pictures team, and I look forward to working with him in his new post.”

Warner Bros. wasn’t capable to replicate the success Marvel Studios had with their own superhero movies. While Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot, was both critical and commercial success, other DC superhero movies did well at the box office but were universally panned by critics. This especially goes for the much anticipated Justice League movie, which is still looking to break even at the box office, while receiving negative reviews. With Hamada at the helm of DC film, things might change for better, something every DC fan hopes for.

Momoa also added that he loves the movie and will watch it again.

“I’ve seen [Justice League] twice. I loved it the second time even more. I’m actually going to watch it again with my kids and my godchild. I’m going to see it with the perfect crowd of people — a regular crowd instead of at a premiere. So I’m excited.”

Although it has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Justice League didn’t only fail with the movie critics, but also on the box office. The movie opened with the $94 million, which is considerably less compared to other DC movies who received even worse reviews. For comparison, Suicide Squad opened with $39 million more than the Justice League, and don’t get us started on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which earned $166 million on the opening weekend. Justice League probably will be a big box office hit, but certainly not as big as Warner Bros. hoped.

The team works well together to deliver more than a few spectacular superhero moments worth seeing on the big screen. “Nothing could save JUSTICE LEAGUE from its loud, ugly, tacky self. Not Wonder Woman, not wide-eyed Ezra Miller, not Joss Whedon’s quippy teardown & rebuild. And Henry Cavill’s mustache is an actual issue; they gave him Uncanny Valley Face. Oof, guys. It’s a rough ride,” concluded Dickey.
