The post “Little Women” Marches Towards $100M Overseas as Theaters Re-open appeared first on EverydayKoala.
]]>Now, as theaters re-open around the world, Little Women generated $760,000 over the weekend from 13 markets. A majority of those ticket sales came from Japan.
It is important to remember that most studios aren’t even reporting box office grosses since so few countries took down restrictions. The small number of movie theaters that did resume business have relied on past hits like The Greatest Showman and Harry Potter to draw audiences.
Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen as the four sisters, alongside Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, and Timothée Chalamet. It is the fourth film adaptation of the classic Louisa May Alcott novel of the same name. The film received six Academy award nominations and won the award for Best Costume Design at the 92nd Annual Academy Awards.
It remains unclear when cinemas will re-open worldwide.

]]>Well, Little Women helmer Greta Gerwig talked about the process of bringing a new version to life (for the seventh time) in a Q&A after an Awardsline screening of the film.
The most important thing for her was to delve deep into the source material, that is Louisa May Alcott’s 19th-century novel.
“The last time I had read it was at 14,” she recalled. “Then, I read it when I was 30, and I felt like I had never read it before. I couldn’t believe how modern and pressing and urgent the message of the book was. There seemed to be all these themes running underneath it that were right there about women and authorship and ownership and art and ambition and money. I just thought, ‘Oh — this is all the stuff that I’m interested in.’ And it was right here in this book that I loved so much, but I never really noticed it.”
She also made it a point to film in on location, that is Concord, where Alcott lived and set her story. “Everything there is just stunningly beautiful and preserved,” she said. “Pretty much anywhere you point the camera it looks like a Winslow Homer painting.”
The film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Louis Garrel, Chris Cooper, and Meryl Streep.

]]>The audiobook hails from Audible.
Dern also stars as Marmee, the March family’s matriarch in Greta Gerwig’s film adaptation of the classic novel.
“Being part of Little Women has completely converted me into an Audible addict!” Laura Dern said in a statement. “I’ve fallen in love with audio — it’s a completely different acting experience. Audio is fantastic in its ability to let stories resonate through the voice alone. It’s so private and intimate, you share the humor, irreverence, and bravery of the writing with the listener in such a personal way.”
Audible’s Susan Jurevics added: “We’re thrilled to make Little Women, starring Laura Dern, available to Audible members. Our listeners are passionate about diving into love in its many forms — romantic, classic, and beyond — and this new Little Women recording encompasses them all. While the March sisters explore love in marriage and motherhood, one of their most enduring bonds is with each other.”

]]>That’s why it’s one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and Greta Gerwig finally gave us a sneak peek into her latest project.
The Oscar-nominated screenwriter and director recently set down with Vanity Fair to discuss her adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel and used the opportunity to share the first look at this period drama.
She unveiled a couple of pictures, showing the leading ladies Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Saoirse Ronan and Eliza Scanlen in character as the March sisters.
This timeless coming-of-age tale was always very close to Gerwig’s heart, and bringing it to the big screen was a deeply personal experience. Despite the fact the story is set in the post-Civil War era, Little Women always felt fairly modern because it follows several female characters, who have a very strong sense of self and are marching to the beat of their own drum.
“They were just people. They were not in a period piece, they were just living. They were the most modern people who had ever existed, up till that point,” explained Gerwig.

Filming of Little Women has recently begun, ahead of its release in December 2019.
