Sean Astin did a great job bringing both humor and gravitas to the role of Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings, but this character was almost played by a very different actor. James Corden recently revealed that he auditioned to play the beloved hobbit in the acclaimed epic fantasy trilogy.

The story about Corden’s audition came up during a recent episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast and he admitted that things didn’t go so great.

“Everyone, every single person in London auditioned for Lord of the Rings. Everybody… I auditioned for Samwise…and I was doing it, Josh. I was doing the accent and everything… Then we got called back the next day. And then none of us got called back after that,” he recalled.

Corden was still a relative unknown back in the day, with just a handful of roles under his belt, but his career flourished in the next two decades. His rise to prominence started with a role in the original London production of The History Boys and its movie adaptation, followed by a sitcom Gavin & Stacey.

Corden is now best known as the host of The Late Late Show with James Corden, but he’s expected to exit the show in mid-2023.

The Second Age is upon us.

Long before Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee made their treacherous journey into Mordor to destroy the One Ring, there were others. Prior to creating The Lord of the Rings, author J.R.R. Tolkien wrote about the Rings of Power which were made for a select number of Elves, Dwarves, and Men, and it is that story that will be revealed in the upcoming Lord of the Rings series.

The first official trailer for The Rings of Power was shown at San Diego Comic-Con during a panel hosted by self-confessed LOTR superfan, Stephen Colbert.

“It’s a story of hope and approaching darkness. This being Tolkien, it’s a story of loss,” the talk show host explained. He also quipped that “I don’t know who the hell some of those people are.”

Set during the Second Age, thousands of years before the events we know in The Hobbit and LOTR, the series features Galadriel and Elrond in their youth and depicts the rise of Sauron. Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay and the rest of their team have been working on the series since 2018, spending months going through Tolkien’s appendices and his book The Silmarillion.

The Rings of Power premieres on Amazon Prime on September 2.

Elijah Wood went to great lengths in order to land the role of Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. This included making an over-the-top audition tape that no one even asked for.

Wood made this intriguing reveal in a recent chat with GQ that saw him breaking down his most iconic characters for the magazine’s YouTube channel.

According to Wood, his original read for Frodo took place in the casting office, which was the requirement for all actors that wanted to be part of Fellowship of the Ring, the first Lord of the Rings movie. After wrapping up the audition, he was driving home and realized he needed to do something special if he wanted to separate himself from other candidates.

Wood ended up hiring a vocal coach and then recruited some of his friends to help him put together an elaborate audition tape.

“We went out to the woods in Griffith Park and shot two of the audition sequences there and one at my house,” Wood revealed.

He gave the tape he made to the casting office, hoping they would forward it to director Peter Jackson.  They did, and it turned out that Jackson liked it very much.

Wood landed the part of Frodo as a result, and it became the one that defined his acting career.

Elijah Wood, who played the heroic Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings film franchise, has revealed that he is up for a cameo in the upcoming Amazon series.

It has been almost two decades since Wood first portrayed Frodo in the iconic fantasy franchise. Now, Wood has expressed his interest in reprising his role in the upcoming Lord of the Rings series from Amazon.

The new series will focus on a young Aragorn. The series will follow his childhood and will be set decades before any of the events of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings take place.

Wood is fully supportive of the new series and although it is unlikely that Frodo will return in the series timeline, he is still hopeful that he will have the opportunity to reprise his role in Middle Earth.

Speaking with IndieWire, he said: “If there was a world where that made sense and was organic to what they’re doing, then yes. Look, any excuse to get to go to New Zealand to work on something, I am absolutely there.”

There is no set release date for the Amazon series but it is currently in pre-production.

The British actor Robert Aramayo is best known for his portrayal of a young Ned stark in the sixth and seventh seasons of Game of Thrones. Now, Deadline and Variety report that he is tapped to play the lead role in Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series. Aramayo will replace Will Poulter who was supposed to play the young hero Beldor but left the project due to scheduling problems.

Amazon banks on Lord of the Rings to replace Game of Thrones as a tremendously popular fantasy show. It appears the network is very confident with the show as it has already ordered a second season, while the shooting of the first season is yet to start.

Lord of the Rings is based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, of course, but is set to take place thousands of years prior to the events depicted in the novels and the successful movie trilogy.

Aramayo will join Joseph Mawle who also played on Game of Thrones. Mawle, who played Benjen Stark, joined the cast last October and will probably play the Villainous Oren. The production is due to begin this year.

As you may know by now, Amazon prepares a Lord of the Rings TV show. While the production of the show is in early stages, there are some actors already expressing their interest. The latest one to do so is Ian McKellen, who previously starred as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie trilogies.

During an appearance at the Graham Norton Show, McKellen was asked to share his thoughts on the chance for someone else to play Gandalf on the TV show. “What do you mean, another Gandalf?” said the actor, before adding. “I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old.”

Although seeing Ian McKellen in the role of Gandalf would be awesome, there isn’t a big chance for that to happen since Amazon will most likely look for a younger cast which doesn’t have ties with previous movies.

Andy Serkis, on the other hand, wouldn’t be so quick to jump on the opportunity. The actor, who portrayed Gollum in the movies, said he thinks a fresh take on the universe is a better thing.

“I don’t know if I’d want to go back into the Lord of the Rings realm,” he said. “I feel like I’ve spent a large chunk of my life doing that. I’ll say good luck and I think fresh eyes are probably a good thing.”

Although there are many unknowns about the Lord of the Rings TV show, we do know that it will be a prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring, with a multi-season order and a potential spin-off series. This will be Amazon’s attempt to parry HBO’s Game of Thrones and create an internationally recognizable series.

The rumors are true! The Lord of the Rings TV show is coming to the small screens. Amazon announced on Monday that the company obtained rights to adapt J.R.R Tolkien’s work into a multiple-season TV show.

“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Amazon’s head of scripted programming. “We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

The first news about the possible Lord of the Rings TV show appeared last week when it was reported that Amazon is in advanced negotiations with Warner Bros. and Tolkien Estate and Trust. The deal is rumored to be worth around $250 and according to the sources, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was directly involved in negotiations.

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” – said Matt Galsor, a representative for HarperCollins, and the Tolkien Estate and Trust.

We also received some information about the story of the Lord of the Rings TV show. Although there were reports that the series could be the remake of the Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy, that won’t be the case. The story of the TV show will focus on the events that precede the Fellowship of The Ring, the first novel in Tolkien’s trilogy.

According to the sources, Amazon’s decision to adapt Tolkien’s work is an attempt to compete with HBO’s Game of Thrones and create a series with a global appeal.
