The new version of Mean Girls had high expectations to live up to, and it managed to exceed them during its opening weekend. The new musical inspired by the 2000s teen classic topped the box office during the MLK four-day weekend with a $33 million opening.

Mean Girls was projected to gross $27–30 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, and it lived up to the hype. It debuted at $28.65 million in North America, and its total opening weekend gross went up to $33.2 million during the fourth day in the theaters. It also made an additional $6.5 million overseas, after opening in 16 international markets.

Chris Aronson, Paramount’s president of domestic distribution, praised Tina Fey’s new twist for resonating with audiences and added they’re expecting even better results as time goes by.

“It’s no secret that the release calendar is a little light for the first couple months of the year and because of the reception to this film we stand a chance of broadening this audience. It really is a crowd-pleaser,” said Aronson in a statement.

Mean Girls premiered on January 12, and releasing it theatrically proved to be a slam dunk for Paramount after they decided to make a pivot from the straight-to-streaming release due to positive test scores.

Fans lost it when members of the original Mean Girls cast appeared in Walmart’s viral Black Friday commercial earlier this year. Rachel McAdams was notably absent, and she recently explained why she turned down the opportunity to reunite with the rest of the cast.

Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert, who appeared alongside McAdams in the beloved teen comedy, agreed to reprise their roles in Walmart’s ad. McAdams recently opened up about her decision to miss the reunion, explaining that commercials simply aren’t her cup of tea.

“A movie sounded awesome, but I’ve never done commercials, and it just didn’t feel like my bag. Also… I didn’t know that everyone was doing it. I would, of course, always love to be part of a ‘Mean Girls’ reunion and hang with my plastics, but yeah, I found that out later,” she told Variety.

McAdams also opened up about the upcoming musical remake of Mean Girls and revealed she came very close to appearing in this project. She told Variety that she “dabbled with a few ideas” with the screenwriter Tina Fey, but it was tough to make it all work in the end. McAdams is excited to see this film, nevertheless, and she believes it will be “fantastic”.

The release date of Mean Girls: The Musical is less than a month away, and expectations are running high! Its leading lady Reneé Rapp just added some more fuel to the fire by joining forces with the rapper Megan Thee Stallion for a brand-new song “Not My Fault”.

The duo recently teased their collaboration on social media, and it didn’t take them long to share it with the world. The catchy banger is inspired by Lindsay Lohan’s iconic line “It’s not my fault you’re like in love with me or something!” from the original Mean Girls film, which served as a basis for the Broadway musical that inspired this new version.

Megan Thee Stallion, who has long called herself “the Black Regina George”, was the obvious choice for this collaboration. She had the time of her life rapping alongside Reneé Rapp, who’ll play this iconic character in the highly-anticipated musical remake of the 2004 classic.

In addition to Rapp as Regina George, Mean Girls: The Musical will also star Angourie Rice, Auliʻi Cravalho, Christopher Briney, Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, Bebe Wood, Avantika Vandanapu, Jon Hamm, and Busy Phillips. It will be released on January 12, 2024, by Paramount Pictures.

The Mean Girls nostalgia is going stronger than ever these days, and the stars of this movie are 100% on board. Amanda Seyfried, Lindsay Lohan, and Lacey Chabert agreed to reprise their roles from the 2000s classic in Walmart’s Black Friday ad, and the final result is so fetch!

Walmart’s new ad features the trio playing the adult versions of their Mean Girls characters, with Lohan doing the narration as a high school guidance counselor Cady Heron. Seyfried’s Karen Smith made her dream come true and became a news reporter, while Chabert’s Gretchen Wieners is still trying to make fetch happen and be a cool mom.

Lohan discussed the ad with People and said it was so nice to be back together after all these years and catch up with everyone. Chabert echoed her statement, adding it was wonderful to spend the day with Seyfried and Lohan and reminisce about the past together.

Mean Girls came out in 2004, and it also starred Rachel McAdams, Tim Meadows, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Franzese, and Jonathan Bennett. It went on to become a cult classic over the course of the past two decades, and the adaptation of a Broadway musical based on this film will hit the theatres this January.

Mean Girls: The Musical was originally only supposed to stream on Paramount+, but that’s no longer the case. Paramount Pictures decided to go big with the release of this highly-anticipated movie, which is now officially heading to theatres this January.

When they first started plotting Mean Girls: The Musical, Paramount opted to only release it on its streaming service Paramount+, but they eventually changed their tune. This film is going theatrical on January 12, 2024, and it’s getting a huge marketing campaign, according to Deadline.

Mean Girls: The Musical is based on the stage musical of the same name, which draws inspiration from the 2004 cult classic written by Tina Fey. She penned the screenplay for the new version, as well, while Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne are in charge of directing it.

Mean Girls: The Musical will star Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Avantika, Mahi Alam, Christopher Briney, Bebe Wood, Ashley Park, Connor Ratliff, Jon Hamm. Tina Fey and Tim Meadows are set to reprise their roles from the original 2004 film.

Mean Girls: The Musical isn’t the first Paramount project to switch from streaming to theatrical release. The studio embraced a similar strategy with last year’s horror Smile, and this strategy definitely worked – this film grossed over $217 million against a $17 million budget and a sequel is on the way.

Mean Girls: The Musical is currently rounding out its cast, and the more we learn about it—the more excited we are! Busy Philipps is the latest star to join this promising project in the role of Regina George’s mother.

Philipps will portray Mrs. George, the mother of Plastics leader Regina, played by Renée Rapp in the new adaptation. This character was previously portrayed by Amy Poehler, who gave us many iconic quotes, including “I’m not a regular mom, I’m a cool mom.”

Mean Girls: The Musical will be Philipps’ first major film project since I Feel Pretty in 2018. She’s mostly been focusing on TV projects in the meantime, most notably the hit Peacock musical comedy Girls5eva.

Philipps’ casting most likely means that Poehler won’t return for the musical adaptation, but this project will feature a few familiar faces, starting with Tina Fey and Tim Meadows. The rest of the cast will include Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Christopher Briney, Bebe Wood, and Jenna Fischer.

No news yet if the original leading ladies, including Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert, will return for Mean Girls: The Musical. Page Six recently reported they refused to come back due to a “disrespectful” money offer, but Seyfried dismissed the rumors, saying they’re “100% into it”, but it’s not really up to them and they haven’t even seen the script yet.

The movie adaptation of Mean Girls: The Musical will mostly feature a brand-new cast—with two notable exceptions. Tina Fey and Tim Meadows will bring a sense of nostalgia to this project by reprising their roles from the original Mean Girls movie.

Fey, who wrote the script for the iconic 2004 teen comedy, discussed its upcoming musical adaptation during a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. The 30 Rock star confirmed she and Meadows will return to their roles from the original movie as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duval, respectively.

“We couldn’t age out, teachers work forever. I want it to be like when Gilligan from Gilligan’s Island was at a trade show and you’re like, ‘Oh he looks so old in his little hat.’ That’s my goal,” Fey told her former Saturday Night Live co-star Seth Meyers.

Mean Girls: The Musical is based on the hit Broadway musical, which received 12 Tony nominations following its premiere in 2018. Reneé Rapp will be the only cast member to return to her role from the Broadway run as Regina George, while the rest of the cast will include Angourie Rice as Cady, Auli’i Cravalho as Janis, Jaquel Spivey as Damian, Bebe Wood as Gretchen, and Avantika Vandanap as Karen.

Fetch may still happen! Almost 20 years after Mean Girls hit theaters, the Plastics are getting another chance to sing to audiences. Paramount+ has officially confirmed that another Mean Girls movie is in the works and it will be a musical venture.

The new flick will be based on the Broadway musical of the 2004 comedy which followed Cady Heron as she returns to the U.S. from Kenya and starts the year at North Shore High School. There, she is exposed to the different cliques and tries to make friends with the popular girls headed by Regina George.

The show ran for 833 performances at the August Wilson Theater, but was forced to close in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly before, Tina Fey, who wrote the original film and the book, announced that the musical would be getting the big screen treatment. Now, after almost three years of waiting, the cast of the forthcoming movie has been revealed.

Angourie Rice, who starred in the recent Spider-Man franchise, will fill the role of Cady which Lindsay Lohan depicted in the film. Reneé Rapp will reprise her Broadway role of Regina George, filling Rachel McAdam’s shoes. Auli’i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey have been cast as Janis and Damien, respectively.

Fey will write the script and produce.
