Fuqua announced the news by sharing a black and white photo of Jaafar Jackson on social media and said he was proud to announce his casting. Jaafar reposted the photo on his Instagram account and said he was humbled and honored to bring his uncle’s story to life.

Jaafar is the son of Michael’s brother Jermaine Jackson, who was the second vocalist and bassist in their group the Jackson 5. He’s been singing and dancing since the age of 12 and showcased his talent by recording covers of Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye, in addition to original songs such as “Got Me Singing”.

The script for this biopic was written by John Logan, while Antoine Fuqua confirmed his involvement as a director earlier this month.

“For me, there is no artist with the power, the charisma, and the sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson. His music and those images are part of my worldview, and the chance to tell his story on the screen alongside his music was irresistible,” said Fuqua in a statement.

The English actor perfectly conveyed the King of Dream’s fury and kindness in The Sandman, but the creator of the character has revealed that another famous name had initially hoped to fill the role. 

While appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Neil Gaiman shared that Michael Jackson wanted to play Dream of The Endless. 

“By 1996, I was being taken to Warners, where the then-president of Warner Bros. sat me down and told me that Michael Jackson had phoned him the day before and asked him if he could star as Morpheus in The Sandman,” said the author who also serves as executive producer on the show. “So, there was a lot of interest in this and they knew that it was one of the Crown Jewels and what did I think? And I was like, ‘Ooh-um.’”

The fact that the King of Pop (who passed away in 2009) asked to portray the King of Dreams is testament to how long it has taken to get The Sandman made. Joseph Gordon Levitt was initially set to produce and star as the comic book character in a film which was announced in 2013 but never got off the ground. 

“I was like, ‘It’s going to be so easy to cast! We just find, you know, an English-speaking actor with great cheekbones, there’s loads of them out there,’” Gaiman said of the Netflix series. “We saw, in the end, about 1,500 Morpheus auditions.”

The singer’s nephew, TJ Jackson, has told the Daily Mirror that a biopic about his uncle is “going to happen”.

“I think it’s in a way disgusting because what sells in this world is negativity. People like to gossip, people like scandals. My uncle is not here to defend himself, so he’s an easy target. He was always an easy target, because he was always quiet,” said the ‘Heaven on My Lips’ singer.

TJ believes that Michael’s time with the Jackson 5, in which his father Tito also performed, should serve as the focus for the proposed film.

“To become, you know, s-x symbols for our huge band and number one in the early 70s as black kids is an incredible accomplishment. That story needs to be amplified in my opinion. So I think there will be a Jackson story, a biopic.”

It is not known whether the 43-year-old nephew is referring to the film announced that was announced back in February. Michael, which will be produced by Graham King who oversaw the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, is being made with the blessing of the “Billie Jean” singer’s estate.

The various countries which will now screen the documentary by British filmmaker Dan Reed include Germany, France, Australia, Spain, Russia Sweden, Israel, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and New Zealand.

Leaving Neverland was broadcast in two parts in the US on March 3 and 4, and is scheduled to be shown in the UK on March 5 and 6.

Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour started its run in Montreal in 2011 and finished in 2014, after 501 shows in 141 cities. It was highest grossing tribute show in history and Cirque du Soleil’s most commercially successful project.

Other projects included acclaimed documentary from 2010, This Is It, and two posthumous albums, 2010’s Michael and 2014’s Xscape.
