Before there was Game of Thrones, there was… Well, we’re not too sure. And neither, apparently, is George R.R. Martin.

With the epic show based on Martin’s series A Song of Ice and Fire ending after its eighth season, HBO announced that a prequel would be produced.

It was confirmed in October that an idea from Kingsman: The Secret Service producer, Jane Goldman, would be going to pilot, starring Naomi Watts of The Book of Henry.

At the time, the author was so excited that he wrote on his blog: “Casting is now underway for THE LONG NIGHT, the first of the GAME OF THRONES successor series to ordered to film. HBO has just announced the first cast member: NAOMI WATTS is coming on board as one of our stars. I could not be more excited. Welcome to Westeros, Naomi.”

But after his slip of finger, Martin is saying “not so fast.”

In another post, the author has now said, “Oh, I should also mention … HBO has informed me that the Jane Goldman pilot is not (yet) titled THE LONG NIGHT. That’s is certainly the title I prefer, but for the moment the pilot is still officially UNTITLED. So… mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa. Elsewise, the pilot is coming along well, with casting falling into place. I could tell you more, but I am not supposed to. We also have a couple of other successor shows still in development, but I cannot tell you about those either. Sorry.”

Oops.

After it was revealed that HBO is developing a prequel to hit series Game of Thrones, the prequel’s first casting choice has now been announced, with Naomi Watts of King Kong signing on to the project to play “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

GOT showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, confirmed that they would not be involved in writing the forthcoming spin-off, of which 4 potential pilots were being considered, but would serve as executive producers.

HBO settled on the pilot by Kingsman: The Golden Circle writer, Jane Goldman, which takes place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones and chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.

Intrigue is coming…
