Pixar’s next feature movie Soul is set to be released to theaters on November 20th (after the studio delayed the June 19th release). Now, the studio announced that the SparkShort titled Burrow will precede the movie.

The company announced the short movie title in a tweet: “Home is where the hare is. See the new Pixar SparkShort BURROW, directed by Madeline Sharafian, in theaters before Soul on November 20. #InternationalRabbitDay.”

Attached to the tweet was the SparkShort’s poster showing a distressed and frightened rabbit standing in its burrow beneath several other burrows with different animals living their everyday lives.

Sharafian is no stranger to working with animated animals. She wrote and directed the short animated Omelette and was the art designer of Coco. She also worked on the Cartoon Network’s We Bare Bears.

As the hashtag suggests the studio dropped the announcement on September 26th—the international rabbit day. The movie has a runtime of just over 6-minutes.

The short movie joins other shorts that preceded each Pixar movie. It is part of a program that the studio initiated, in which employees get six months and a limited budget to develop short movies—this way the studio identifies new talents. Earlier SparkShorts, such as Smash and Grab, Kitbull, Float, Wind, Loop, and Out, are streaming on Disney+.

A solid opening weekend for Pixar’s Onward as it led the charts. The animated movie grossed $40 million domestically and an additional $28 million overseas, bringing its total income to $68 million. The movie also enjoyed generally positive reception, though it did not make as much noise as previous titles of the acclaimed animation studio.

These numbers fit the expectations of Pixar and Disney as the movie was expected to earn 40-45 million dollars in its first weekend. Cathleen Taff, Disney’s president of global distribution expressed her optimism: “We’re excited to see such good word-of-mouth. That bodes well for the life of its run in theaters.”

Directed by Dan Scanlon, Onward follows two elf brothers, voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, who wish to spend one last day with their late father. The second place on the charts was taken by The Invisible Man on its second week of screening. The Elisabeth Moss movie added $15.5 million to its earnings for a $52.6 million in total. Warner Bros.’ The Way Back took third place with a little disappointing $8.5 million despite Ben Affleck’s name on the roster.

The second official trailer for Pixar’s Onward proves there’s no magic like family.

The new trailer for the animated tale is here giving us a deeper look into the story of the two teenage elf brothers (Chris Pratt and Tom Holland) who set out on a journey to bring their father back to life.

Set in a largely magic-less suburban fantasy world — despite the hissing unicorns, the two embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still magic left out there.

“We’ve only got 24 hours to bring back the rest of dad. We’re going on a quest,” says Barley (Pratt) as he and his brother Ian (Holland) hop in a van.

The new clip also features Octavia Spencer’s Manticore, a once “fearless” magical creature that’s a part lion, part bat, and part scorpion.

Mel Rodriguez, Lena Waithe, Ali Wong, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus also lend their voices to the Dan Scanlon-directed film.

Helmer Pete Docter has finally revealed more details of his upcoming directed feature for Pixar, Soul.

Described as a film that “will take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions,” it will be the fourth film Docter helms for Pixar following Monsters, Inc., Up, and Inside Out.

Soul will star Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey as the leads. Daveed Diggs, Phylicia Rashad, and Questlove also lend their voices to the original animated film.

When he finally, he gets the job of a lifetime, he dies and finds himself at the You Seminar, “a celestial workshop for souls to be created and given personality traits before they move on to real humans.”

“I’m directing a film that asks the ultimate question that we’ve all thought about at one time or another: Why am I here? Where did I come from? And what am I here for?” Docter revealed to expo-goers. “But who would make a cartoon about that? Metaphysics? We’re calling it Soul.”

Lee Unkrich, i.e. the director who brought us the tear-jerking Toy Story 3, has announced that he will be leaving Pixar after 25 years.

Unkrich announced the news to his employees last week (January 18) before sharing a heartfelt letter on Twitter.

“It is impossible for me to adequately express how epic this 25-year journey has been, and how much it has meant to work alongside such fantastic people and phenomenal talents,” Unkrich posted, addressing his kind words to his “Pixar family.”

“Many of you are like family to me, and it’s nearly incomprehensible to imagine no longer being here at Pixar with you. But life is about change, and it’s now my time for new challenges and new adventures.”

He continued: “I am not leaving to make films at another studio”. Instead he promises that his decision will see him “spending much-needed time with my family and pursuing interests that have long been back-burnered.”

He added: “I often tell people that the worst thing about working at Pixar is that I have never gotten to see ‘the new Pixar movie’ without having worked on it or knowing everything about it. While it will be many years before I get that opportunity, I look forward to it. I’ll be first in line to see what you create together.”

Best of luck Lee Unkrich and thank you for your wonderful contribution to Pixar.

The leading voice stars for Pixar’s next original movie have been announced.

Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer will work together in Disney-Pixar’s Onward.

Set in what Pixar described as a “suburban fantasy,” the animated film follows two teenage elf brothers, voiced by Holland and Pratt, who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still magic left in the world. The two worked together in the past on Avengers: Infinity War.

“At Pixar, we try to create stories that come from some kind of personal truth,” director Dan Scanlon said in a statement. “This film was inspired by my own relationship with my brother.”

“Chris brings equal parts huge heart and fantastic humor to his character,” said Rae, Onward producer, who added Spencer “can do it all. We’re especially excited about the depth as well as humor that she brings to her character.”

Holland “has an infectious charm and sincerity that makes you root for him in every character he plays,” Scanlon said and added that “there is no one funnier than Julia. But she also brings a warmth and loving side to her character.”

Onward is scheduled to hit theaters March 6, 2020.
