Fans of Ray Donovan may not have seen the last of the character.

Many were left in shock when Showtime decided to cancel the series in 2020 without any prior warning. Amongst those who had not expected the announcement was showrunner David Hollander.

Hollander had planned to end the series after 8 seasons and so it was decided that the final season would rather be released as a full-length feature film which Hollander would direct. Ray Donavan: The Movie premiered in January this year, with Liev Schreiber, Jon Voigt, and Eddie Marsad all starring.

Although the film may have wrapped up the titular character’s story, Schreiber has said he would not be opposed to revisiting the role.

“I would consider it,” said the star of The French Dispatch while at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. “It was always [longtime Showtime chief] David Nevins’ baby. I know he loves this character and this story, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more from David.”

Schreiber also acknowledged how surprised he was by the outpouring of love for the show in the wake of its sudden cancellation.

“I didn’t know that many people loved it. You realize that seven years of work that you were doing for money really moved some people. That meant a lot to me.”

After surprisingly getting canceled after seven seasons last year, Ray Donovan will be getting a feature-length film at Showtime.

The show’s star Liev Schreiber will return in the title role and Jon Voight and Kerris Dorsey will be reprising their roles.

The film will pick up where Season 7 ended with Mickey (Voight) on the run and Ray (Schreiber) trying to stop him before he causes more trouble. The present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan will be weaved with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years prior.

“When ‘Ray Donovan’ went off our air after seven great seasons, we heard from so many of its loyal fans that they were not ready to say goodbye to Ray and the wonderfully dysfunctional Donovan clan,” Gary Levine, co-president of Entertainment for Showtime said. “And so, for them, we are delighted that Liev and David are creating a thrilling new chapter of this iconic series.”

Ray Donovan is one of the longest-running Showtime series to date, airing 82 episodes during its seven season run. The show received 10 Emmy nominations during its run, with Hank Azaria winning for best guest actor in a drama for his role as Ed Cochran. Voight won a Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a series.

The script is being co-written by Schreiber and series showrunner David Hollander, with Hollander also directing. Executive producing are Hollander, Schreiber, Mark Gordon, Bryan Zuriff, and Lou Fusaro.

Production is set to start later this year in New York.

Ray Donovan has been one of Showtime’s biggest hits from its very first episode, and the network isn’t ready to part ways with it just yet. They’re bringing this crime drama for another season.

Ray Donovan tells the story of a successful Hollywood “fixer”, portrayed by Liev Schreiber. He takes care of dirty business for his high-profile clients, but running this shady operation becomes even more difficult after his father Mickey ends up leaving prison earlier than expected.

The first episode of Ray Donovan aired back in 2013, and it broke the record for the biggest premiere on Showtime, previously held by Homeland. In addition to winning over the viewers, this show was also well-received by the critics and other relevant organizations.

It won the Critics’ Choice Award for the most exciting new series back in 2013, and Golden Globes and Emmys quickly took notice. Ray Donovan received several nods at these awards ceremonies over the years, and Jon Voight even collected a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Mickey Donovan.
