Fans of Ray Donovan may not have seen the last of the character.

Many were left in shock when Showtime decided to cancel the series in 2020 without any prior warning. Amongst those who had not expected the announcement was showrunner David Hollander.

Hollander had planned to end the series after 8 seasons and so it was decided that the final season would rather be released as a full-length feature film which Hollander would direct. Ray Donavan: The Movie premiered in January this year, with Liev Schreiber, Jon Voigt, and Eddie Marsad all starring.

Although the film may have wrapped up the titular character’s story, Schreiber has said he would not be opposed to revisiting the role.

“I would consider it,” said the star of The French Dispatch while at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. “It was always [longtime Showtime chief] David Nevins’ baby. I know he loves this character and this story, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more from David.”

Schreiber also acknowledged how surprised he was by the outpouring of love for the show in the wake of its sudden cancellation.

“I didn’t know that many people loved it. You realize that seven years of work that you were doing for money really moved some people. That meant a lot to me.”
