]]>According to the official logline, this film will be set during the Harlem Renaissance of 1924 and center on “a fractured family of once-great monster hunters who face an unimaginable evil that descends upon New York City.” It’s based on the comic book series of the same name, created by David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, and Chuck Brown.
This announcement comes shortly after King hit the award season trail with her directorial feature debut One Night in Miami. She was nominated for the best director trophy at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and NAACP Image Awards, but failed to score a nod in the same category at the Oscars.
King will also be credited as one of the producers of Bitter Root. She’s also attached to the upcoming Netflix movie The Harder They Fall, also starring Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, and Lakeith Stanfield.

]]>The film takes place in Miami, Florida on February 25, 1964 and it’s inspired by true events with the iconic Black figures including Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom, Jr.), and Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), coming together to discuss the civil rights movement.
“You brothers — you could move mountains without lifting a finger,” Malcolm X tells Cassius Clay, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown in the trailer. The minister adds, “This movement that we are in is called a struggle — because we are fighting for our lives.”
The film is an Oscar hopeful and it could make King the first Black woman to be nominated for best director.
The film is produced by Jess Wu Calder and Keith Calder of Snoot Entertainment and Jody Klein of ABKCO.
One Night in Miami will be released in select theaters on December 25, 2020 and streamed on Amazon Prime Video on January 15, 2021.

List of winners in movie categories included Spike Lee’s latest film BlacKkKlansman, and actors Michael B. Jordan and Regina King. The BET Awards were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on June 23rd, with Regina Hall taking on the hosting duties for the first time.

Regina King collected the award for her critically acclaimed supporting turn in this film, but this wasn’t much of a surprise since she’s always been a front runner in this category.
If Beale Street Could Talk is a harrowing tale of a young woman living in Harlem, who’s trying to prove her fiance has been wrongly accused of a violent crime before the birth of their child. In addition to King, it also stars KiKi Layne and Stephan James.

]]>The Seven Seconds actress took to the stage at the Beverley Hills Hotel on Sunday as she won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for If Beale Street Could Talk.
During her acceptance speech, the 47-year-old vowed to do her part to represent the sexes in film.
“I just want to say that I’m going to use my platform right now to say that in the next two years everything I produce — I’m making a vow, and it’s going to be tough, to make sure everything I produce is 50 percent women,” she said. “And I challenge anyone that’s out there, who is in a position of power, not just in our industry, all industries, I challenge you to challenge yourselves and stand with us in solidarity and do the same.”
According to IMDB, Regina’s next producing projects include Warrior about a semi-retired NFL Player and a high school principal, and No Safe Place about the affect of child murders on an Atlanta community during the 1970s.

]]>In addition to scoring best picture victory, Black Panther took home awards in additional two categories – best director and best ensemble. The list of winners features a few more Oscar hopefuls, including Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk).
Members of the Black Film Critics Circle had the same vision – advancing a diversity of themes and messages in cinema which future generations may enjoy. Their co-president Mike Sargent feels the society made an important step towards this goal in 2018.
“This has been a year of significant advancement for storytellers of color. The diversity of types of films being made by filmmakers of color and how well they have been received at the global box office speaks volumes to antiquated notion that ‘black films don’t travel’ or have international appeal,” said Sargent.
