Dawson played Ahsoka Tano in the episode “Chapter 13: The Jedi” of the hit Disney+ show The Mandalorian, but this actually wasn’t our first introduction to this character. She previously appeared in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, with Ashley Eckstein providing the voice.

According to its official logline, Ahsoka is set after the fall of the Empire, and it will follow the former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

Dawson was present when the teaser trailer was unveiled at London’s Star Wars Celebration, and she revealed what we can expect of her character in this series.

“Though she is not a Jedi, she has so much of that at heart for her – she’s driven by trying to do good. She sees a threat other people aren’t seeing… She has a sense that there’s something, she knows that these foes are not easily dismissed,” said Dawson.

Ahsoka will premiere on Disney+ in August, and it will also star Ray Stevenson, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker.

Despite having starred in several productions and gaining critical praise prior, the Canadian actor’s breakout performance was as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. He beat 1,500 other actors for the role. 

It was announced last year that Christensen would reprise his role after 15 years in the upcoming Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and it now seems as though he will get to explore the character even further in another production for the streamer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 40-year-old actor will appear in the Star Wars offshoot Ahsoka, starring Rosario Dawson as the Jedi Knight she portrayed in The Mandalorian. 

The new series is set years after the events which took place in Return of the Jedi, but could possibly see Christensen appear in flashbacks as Ahsoka was Anakin’s Padawan.

The series’ plot is taking place in a not so far future, in which the United States of America was torn apart by a second civil war and Manhattan became a DMZ—a demilitarized zone. 

Dawson will portray Alma Ortega who tries to find her son after separating from him when the city was evacuated. In her journey, she has to deal with numerous gangs and warlords fighting to control the DMZ. Bratt will portray one of the gang leaders who strive for world domination. Other actors tied to the projects are Hoon Lee, Freddy Miyares, and Jordan Preston Carter.

Patino said that DMZ is an explosive playground in which the power of community and the human spirit are celebrated. He expressed his admiration of the cast and his partner DuVernay, who he referred to as “inimitable and ever-inspiring”.

It should be noted that the original comics creator Brian Wood, who wrote the comics and illustrated it with Riccardo Burchielli, is not involved in the project. The announcement also did not mention the Journalist Matty Roth, one of the main protagonists in the comics.

Showrunner Andy Greenwald made the announcement on Twitter confirming that the 10-episode series won’t be returning for a second season.

“Just wanted to let you know some disappointing news before you hear it from anyone else: Briarpatch isn’t returning for another season at USA,” Greenwald tweeted. “Though I’ve known for months, it’s still a bummer. We had an amazing story planned for S2 and I was lucky enough to work with the most amazing writers and crew, all of whom were itching to get back to work. I think we were going to do something special,” the Twitter post reads.

He also hinted that the series could be picked up by another network if it’s popularity increases. “If enough people keep checking the show out on demand, anything’s possible.”

Briarpatch was based on Ross Thomas’s book of the same name and it followed Allegra Dill (Dawson), an investigator returning to her hometown of Texas after her sister’s murder. During her search for her sister’s killer, she tries to bring her corrupt hometown down.

Jay R. Ferguson, Brian Geraghty, and Edi Gathegi also starred in the series.

Multiple outlets confirm that Rosario Dawson has been cast in the Disney+ series from creator, showrunner and executive producer Jon Favreau. 

Dawson’s casting was kept secret until production on the season has already wrapped, but Variety confirms that the actress has been cast in the guest-starring role of Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice.

Season 2 of Star Wars: The Mandalorian is slated to drop on the streamer this fall.
