The WGA Awards are one of the last ceremonies to take place ahead of Oscars week, and its list of winners is pretty impressive. Severance led the way with wins in two different categories, while Everything Everywhere All at Once and Women Talking dominated the movie field.

Everything Everywhere cemented its status as the Oscars front-runner after beating The Menu, Nope, The Fabelmans, and Tár to win the best original screenplay. Women Talking pulled an upset in the best adapted screenplay category, where it faced tough competition in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Top Gun: Maverick, and She Said.

The win for Everything Everywhere increases its chances of winning the Oscar in the same category, but the field is even more competitive at this show since it also includes The Banshees of Inisherin and Triangle of Sadness. Women Talking also isn’t a lock at the Oscars, and the German anti-war epic All Quiet on the Western Front is its strongest competitor.

The TV field at the WGA Awards was pretty strong, but the sci-fi drama Severance managed to come on top. In addition to winning the trophy for the best drama, it was named the best new series, while The Bear picked up the award for the best comedy.

2022 has been another benchmark year for TV fans and it’s given us one amazing new show after another. We hand-picked five very best series that premiered this year and showed the world that the golden age of television is still here.

House of the Dragon

Game of Thrones fans spent a long time waiting for the show’s first spin-off – and it was worth the wait. The first season of House of the Dragon chronicled the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, and there’s more where that came from!

The Bear

Culinary dramas were all the rage this year, and The Bear put them on the map. This acclaimed show saw Jeremy Allen White play a pro chef who returns to Chicago to run his family’s sandwich shop following his brother’s passing.

Heartstopper

One of Netflix’s best coming-of-age dramas, Heartstopper follows two teenage boys whose unlikely friendship grows into something bigger and more profound.

Severance

If you’re a fan of mind-blowing psychological thrillers, put Severance on your watch list ASAP. It centers on a man working for a mysterious corporation, where workers agreed to have their work and non-work memories separated.

Bad Sisters

Bad Sisters is a fun murder mystery that follows a group of sisters, who band together to protect each other from serious accusations after their brother-in-law winds up dead.

The Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards are a relatively new ceremony, but they have a sharp eye for the ever-changing television landscape. The sophomore ceremony took place this weekend, with the top awards going to some of the year’s most acclaimed shows, starting with The White Lotus and Severance.

The White Lotus picked up a trophy for best broadcast network or cable limited or anthology series. Its stars Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge also received acting awards in their respective categories, while Mike White picked up two trophies for writing and directing the show.

As for Severance, the Apple TV+ sci-fi physiological thriller dominated streaming categories. It won the award for the best streaming drama series, acting awards for its stars John Turturro and Britt Lower, directing trophy for Ben Stiller, and a writing award for Dan Erickson.

As for the rest of the winners, Abbott Elementary, Better Call Saul, and Dopesick also did pretty great and picked up four awards each. This Is Us topped the list of nominations with 12 nods, but eventually only won two awards, including the best broadcast network drama series.

The HCA Awards were presented by the Hollywood Critics Association on August 13 and 14 in Los Angeles, with the first night focusing on broadcast and cable awards and the second one honoring streaming platforms.

The past year has given us some pretty amazing TV shows and the Hollywood Critics Association found a perfect way to honor them. The nominations for the HCA TV Awards are in, with This Is Us, Ted Lasso, and Severance leading the way with 12 nominations each.

NBC’s This Is Us is leading the way when it comes to the broadcast network and cable nominations, followed by Successions with 11 nods. It owes most of its nominations to its ensemble cast, but it’s also in the running for the best broadcast network drama.

As for Severance, the rookie sci-fi thriller is in the running for the best streaming drama series, competing against the likes of Loki, Ozark, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and more. It owes the rest of its nominations to its amazing cast, writers, and directors.

Apple TV+ gave us one of the most mind-bending TV shows in recent memory with their sci-fi thriller Severance and there’s more where it came from! This critically acclaimed series has been renewed for its second season ahead of its Season 1 finale.

Severance centers around a group of employees working at a sinister biotech corporation Lumon Industries, whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives. The series was created by Dan Erickson with Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle serving as directors.

Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, announced the show’s renewal in an official statement and said they’re excited to unpack more layers of Lumon in the second season.

“Thanks to creator Dan Erickson, the brilliant Ben Stiller, and an incomparable cast and crew, ‘Severance’ has imagined an existence that‘s equal parts riveting and enthralling as viewers around the globe can’t get enough of these rich characters,” said Cherniss.

The final episode of the first season of Severance will hit Apple TV+ on April 8. Adam Scott plays the lead role on this riveting show while the rest of the cast includes Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette.

Ted Lasso dominated the nominations in the comedy categories, with its stars Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Toheeb Jimoh, and Nick Mohammed all receiving acting nods for their work in the series. Apple TV’s hit series has also been nominated in writing and directing categories, in addition to receiving a nod for the best streaming comedy series.

As for Severance, the rookie sci-fi thriller is in the running for the best streaming drama series, competing against the likes of Loki, Ozark, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and more. It owes the rest of its nominations to its amazing cast, writers, and directors.

The Hollywood Critics Association will hand out their TV awards over two nights on August 13 and 14 at the Beverly Hilton.
