The cancelation of Shadow & Bone is the biggest shocker, given the popularity of its source material. Based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels, this fantasy series found success with its first season, but viewership numbers significantly dropped later on and Netflix decided to cancel it after two seasons.

Bardugo said she’s “heartbroken and deeply disappointed” by the show’s cancelation, but added she’ll look at this adaptation of her work with pride and tremendous joy.

“I am so grateful to our writers, our crew, and our extraordinary cast who are not just wildly talented, but genuinely good people. Most of all I want to say how grateful I am to the folks reading this – whether you found your way to the books first or discovered them through the show,” said wrote on Instagram.

In addition to Shadow & Bone, Netflix also canceled the comedy series Glamorous starring Kim Cattrall and Miss Benny, which premiered this summer. Several adult animated comedies were also axed by Netflix in the streamer’s latest cancelation streak, including Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall.

The show is based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling fantasy series, who commented about the renewal, saying “there are so many places we’ve barely gotten to visit and I can’t wait to introduce our audience to more of the saints, soldiers, thugs, thieves, princes, and privateers who make this world so much fun to explore. In addition to announcing the renewal of Shadow & Bone, Netflix revealed the first season was watched by 55 million member households in its first 28 days and hit no. 1 in 79 countries following its release on April 23rd.

The series is based on Leigh Bardugo’s worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels. In the trailer, we meet Jessie Mei Li’s Alina Starkov as she reveals her newfound power, and  Ben Barnes’ General Kirigan, who meets Alina for the first time.

“You and I are going to change the world,” Kirigan tells Alina.

The story is set in a war-torn world where soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed a power that could help set her country free. Alina is taken from everything she knows to train as a part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha when the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold is looming. But she soon sees that nothing is as it seems and she finds her allies and enemies can be the same.

The series is produced by Stranger Things outfit 21 Laps Entertainment. Also starring in Shadow and Bone are Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, and Kit Young.
