]]>Labor Day is traditionally considered to be a slow weekend at the box office, as most people try to make the best of the final days of summer and usually stay out of theaters. That didn’t stop Shang-Chi from collecting $90 million in its first four days of release at the domestic box office, breaking the record previously held by 2007’s Halloween with $30.6 million.
Shang-Chi also easily broke the IMAX domestic weekend Labor Day record, with $8 million earned in North America alone. Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, praised it for delivering an important statement about people wanting to get back to the movies.
“It’s clear that great filmmaking plus an exclusive theatrical release is a winning formula at the box office, and this groundbreaking film has successfully launched an exciting new cinematic journey for Marvel and a strong fall blockbuster slate for the industry,” said Gelfond in a statement.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is Marvel’s first film with an Asian lead, and it was highly praised for pushing the boundaries for Asian representation in Hollywood since its premiere on September 3rd.

]]>According to Variety, the film is set to have an estimated $75 million to $85 million over its four-day debut.
This puts Shang-Chi slightly above the debut of Black Widow which opened to $80 million over three days and $60 million of Disney Plus Premier Access. Shang-Chi opened exclusively in theaters, unlike Black Widow which used a hybrid release model.
It’s also expected to break the record for all-time Labor Day weekend earnings, taking over for 2007’s Halloween, which made $30.6 million.
Shang-Chi, Marvel’s first Asian-led superhero film, stars Simu Liu as he battles the criminal syndicate run by his assassin father. The film was directed by Dustin Daniel Cretton and it also stars Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung, Benedict Wong, and Awkwafina.
Rounding out the Top 5 chart are Candyman with an estimated $13.2 million, Free Guy with $10 to $12 million, PAW Patrol with $5.6 million, and Jungle Cruise with $5 million over the holiday weekend.
