The show’s creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone inked a new deal worth a reported $900 million to produce South Park content in the next six years. This will include one season per year on Comedy Central and two movies a year for streaming service Paramount+. The first two movies under this deal are expected to be released at some point in 2021.

These movies will follow South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, the show’s only full-length release until now. Hitting theaters in 1999, the movie was a box office hit and earned $83.1 million compared to a $21 million budget.

“Comedy Central has been our home for 25 years, and we’re really happy that they’ve made a commitment to us for the next 75 years,” said Parker and Stone in a statement confirming the news.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there wasn’t yet a full-length 24th season. Instead, two specials were produced. “The Pandemic Special” was released in September 2020, while “South ParQ Vaccination Special” premiered in March 2021. Both special episodes met with positive reviews and were among the most-watched cable telecasts of their respective years.

South Park premiered back in 1997, with 309 episodes being broadcast since then. Despite being more than two decades on television, the show remains one of the most popular and influential animated comedies.

The season will begin on September 30 on Comedy Central with an hour-long special episode titled “The Pandemic Special”. As the name suggests the episode will deal with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Randy comes to terms with his role in the COVID-19 outbreak as the on-going pandemic presents continued challenges to the citizens of South Park,” the official synopsis reads. “The kids happily head back to school but nothing resembles the normal that they once knew; not their teachers, not their homeroom, not even Eric Cartman.”

Judging by the trailer for the new episode, Randy and Cartman will be at the center of the story. Randy is seemingly trying to cash in on the situation, announcing a “pandemic special” of his own. Cartman is trying to avoid going back to school after the long break due to the pandemic. “They’re going to try and make us go to school. Do you really want to go back to that slavery?” he asks Stan in the trailer. Stan, on the other hand, is more worried about being infected by Cartman.

ViacomCBS recently appointed Grant Gish, former Marvel Studios animation boss as Senior VP of Adult Animation. He is reportedly looking into ways to take the South Park brand even further.

Gish told CNBC: “As long as you’re doing something new, and that could be anything from a new style to a new tone to a new voice coming from a specific writer, I think it can work.

“An animation audience is looking for something unique. That’s what The Simpsons and South Park have famously done. So I want to try a little bit of everything, even though a lot of it will be targeted to the tried and true with brands people know.”

He did not give much away concerning whether or not a movie is in the works but by the sounds of it, exciting things are on the way.

Co-creator Matt Stone added: “I am 48. Trey turns 50 this year. So I will say that I don’t think we will be doing this show when we’re 60.”

In addition to creating three more seasons of the show, the creators are considering making another feature. It has been 20 years since the arrival of the South Park movie: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.

“We think of ourselves as filmmakers, and it’s like, everyone is doing TV now,” said Stone. “It’s like, movies, even though the movie business is all f***ed up. And everyone will tell you don’t go into movies. We just want to do a movie.”
