The CW canceled so many shows recently that it’s no longer a shocker to see one of their series get the ax. The Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift is the latest victim of the network’s ongoing cancelation streak.

This series centers on the titular billionaire inventor, who is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. Tian Richards played the lead role, while the rest of the cast included Ashleigh Murray, Marquise Vilsón, Albert Mwangi, April Parker Jones, and LeVar Burton.

Despite its low rating, Tom Swift was quite historic because it was the first network TV show with a gay Black lead and Tian Richards said that it feels amazing to see how meaningful his character is to the viewers.

“To be airing during Pride Month has been such a highlight because the show is so many different intersections and we get to talk about the queer experience, what it’s like to actually exist and not just to be entering that space by way of coming out or coming to terms with ourselves,” Richards told Entertainment Weekly.

Tom Swift premiered on the CW on May 31, and only five episodes aired before its cancelation was announced.

Several broadcast networks announced cancelations of several shows in the past few days, but the CW took things to a whole new level. They did a major purge, canceling seven shows in a single day, including Charmed and Legacies.

The CW was known for giving their shows early renewal year in, year out, but something shifted recently. The network executives seem to be on a cancelation spree right now, and the long list of shows they decided to ax includes Dynasty, Roswell, New Mexico, and In the Dark. Naomi and 4400 have also been canceled after a single season.

The cancelation of Legacies is especially devastating for the CW viewers because it marks the end of The Vampire Diaries franchise, one of the network’s biggest hits. The CW can still rely on their smash hit Riverdale and Arrowverse shows The Flash and Superman & Lois to attract the viewers.

The cancelation of several beloved shows in a single day was a huge shocker for fans, but it makes sense in the grand scheme of things. According to Deadline, this decision comes in the face of the CW’s potential sale and ownership change, and this marks the first year that the network canceled more shows than it renewed.

Season Three of the CW drama has cast Bridget Regan to play Poison Ivy.

Multiple outlets confirm that Batwoman has tapped Regan to play Pamela Isley, aka Poison Ivy, for the series’ upcoming third season. She will star opposite lead Javicia Leslie.

Regan’s Poison Ivy is a former botany student of Gotham University described as a passionate, brilliant scientist with a mind for changing the world for the better. But everything changes when she was experimented on by a colleague, injected with various plant toxins which turned her into the infamous villain. With a formidable power coursing through her veins, Pamela used her powers to do what she thought was right, even if Batman and those closest to her disagreed with her dangerous methods. Now effectively wiped off the board for years, Batwoman and the Bat Team must prepare themselves for Poison Ivy to return with a vengeance.

Regan joins newcomers Nick Creegan and Victoria Caragena, who will appear as Marquis Jet and Renee Montoya, respectively as well as returning stars Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, and Camrus Johnson.

The fourth season of Black Lightning will be its last.

Just over a week after the network ordered a pilot for a potential spinoff, The CW confirms that Black Lightning will end with Season 4.

The superhero drama is based on the DC character of the same name. It follows Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams), a high school principal who dons his superhero suit after years of retirement when a local gang recruits one of his star students.

“When we first started the Black Lighting journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black Women would be a unique addition to the superhero genre,” executive producer Salim Akil said in a statement. “The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined, Black People Want To See Themselves in all their complexities.”

He continued: “Thank you to the phenomenal cast, writers, and crew without whom none of this would’ve been possible. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve been able to do and the moments we’ve been able to create in bringing DC’s first African-American family of superheroes to life for the culture.”

Black Lightning also stars Christine Adams, China Anne McClain, Nafessa Williams, James Remar, Marvin Jones III, Jordan Calloway and Damon Gupton.

Deadline was first to report that Greg Berlanti and the network are working on a new superhero series based on the DC characters created by Joëlle Jones. The series hails from Queen of the South executive producer and co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez and Berlanti Productions.

The one-hour drama follows Yara Flor, a Latina Dreamer who was born of an Amazonian Warrior and a Brazilian River God. She learns that she is Wonder Girl and with her newfound power must fight the evil forces that would seek to destroy the world.

News of a Wonder Girl series comes after DC Comics unveiled Flor as the next iteration of Wonder Woman in a series of upcoming comics titled Future State.

Should the project go to series, Wonder Girl will join the network’s Arrowverse, which includes The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman and the upcoming Superman & Lois.

Since 2012, the CW has created its own DC universe, the Arrowverse, Starting with Arrow and later with several other shows and spin-offs. Arrow itself has ended last season but the other shows are still going strong.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all the shows, with The Flash, Batwoman, and Supergirl forced to end their season early. Furthermore, the pandemic delayed production of the new seasons causing the network to move their fall schedule to 2021. This, alongside several cast changes and new additions to the universe, makes the Arrowverse look a little different this year.

Now the network finally releases the official release dates for four of the shows. The second season of Batwoman is set to begin on Sunday, January 17th. The fourth season of Black Lightning is set for Monday, February 8th. The seventh season of The Flash and the debut of the new Superman & Lois series are set for Tuesday, February 23rd.

The two remaining shows, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, will arrive later on and they still don’t have an official release date. Legends of Tomorrow typically premieres later than the other shows. The sixth season of Supergirl, which is set to be the last, is held back due to the lead actress Melissa Benoist’s pregnancy.

The 100 is one of the CW’s most beloved shows. After 7 seasons, the series is now coming to an end with a fitting total of 100 episodes. Now, the fans will have to say goodbye to the post-apocalyptic world they have followed for years. Or will they?

One episode in the final season actually serves as a backdoor pilot for a potential prequel series. It is set 97 years before the events of The 100 and focuses on the children of the villainous Bill Cadogan. However, there is no official confirmation such a prequel will be made.

But hope is still alive. Jason Rothenberg the creator of The 100 told CBR recently that the idea is very much alive. “I wish I could say yes to that. We’re in the same kind of holding pattern, waiting for the powers that be to decide. If there’s any good news, it’s just that they’re still talking about it. To me, that’s good news. We have a pulse.”

Another series that finds itself in a similar situation is Green Arrow and the Canaries. As in The 100, an episode in Arrow’s final season served as a possible pilot for a spinoff, and as is the case with The 100, it is still in the executive’s limbo. We’ll have to just wait and see.

Kate Kane will no longer be the lead character in the CW’s Batwoman. Following Ruby Rose’s departure, the show has decided to have a new lead character instead of recasting Rose’s Kane.

The new lead is named Ryan Wilder and is younger than Kate Kane—she’s in her mid to late 20s. It’s still unclear if Ryan is a new character or a code name for an existing DC character, and Season 2 will show her journey to becoming Batwoman.

The official casting note said, “[Ryan is] likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed” and “nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her.” Ryan is a former drug-runner, but now sober living in her van with her plant and she’s a skilled, but undisciplined fighter. Like Kane, she’s an out lesbian, and performers who identify as LGBTQ have been invited to read for the role.

The series premiered last fall and was the first superhero series in television history to feature an LGBTQ character as the main role. Last month Rose revealed that she was exiting the show.

Multiple outlets report that the network gave The Lost Boys a green light, just like it did during the last pilot season. The order for a series reboot of the 1987 film was also given during the 2019-2020 season but the network ultimately passed.

According to Variety, the new version follows a mother and her Gen Z sons as they move to the seaside town where she grew up. There they discover there’s a sinister reason the local cool kids sleep all day, party all night, never grow up and never get old. Family bonds are tested as the brothers find themselves on opposite sides of a mythological struggle.

The new pilot hails from Heather Mitchell and Rob Thomas who serve as writers and executive producers. It is reported that cast members from the first pilot are also attached to the new one.

Since 2012, the CW has created its own DC universe, the Arrowverse, Starting with Arrow and later with several other shows and spin-offs. Arrow itself has ended last season but the other shows are still going strong.

The CW’s Kung-Fu reboot pilot adds to its cast.

Deadline is first to report that Jon Prasida (Hiding), Shannon Dang (The L Word) and Eddie Liu (Silicon Valley) have been cast as series regulars in the forthcoming pilot.

The new series, inspired by the original but with a female lead, hails from Christina M. Kim, Martin Gero, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Warner Bros. TV.

In the new Kung Fu, “a quarter-life crisis causes a young Chinese-American woman to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. But when she returns to find her hometown overrun with crime and corruption, she uses her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and bring criminals to justice… all while searching for the assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor and is now targeting her.”

The original 1970s Kung-Fu was created by Ed Spielman and starred David Carradine.

The CW has given Lost Boys a pilot order — again.
