The series, which received a two-season order at Peacock, is based on a short video made by writer-director Morgan Cooper. The clip captured the attention of Will Smith, who liked the idea and decided to help Cooper turn it into a full project. This news comes just over a week after HBO Max announced that they were airing an unscripted Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion special that will feature Will Smith, Tatyana Ali, Karyn Parsons, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid, and Alfonso Ribeiro. HBO Max is exclusively streaming The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Smith will executive produce the show alongside the original show producers Quincy Jones and Benny Medina and creators Andy and Susan Borowitz. Cooper will co-write the script.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the upcoming show will “dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases of what it means to be a Black man in America today, while still delivering the swagger and fun nods to the original show.”

The reboot sounds like it will have a powerful message in addition to giving fans a chance to return to the world of Bel-Air.

Entitled Bel-Air, the trailer depicts the teenager from West Philadelphia getting arrested after a fight on the basketball court and his mother sending him off to live with his aunt and uncle in the elite California suburb of Bel Air in hopes of turning a new leaf.

Cooper described the project as a reinterpretation that brings the story into modern-day life in 2019.

The 4-minute clip, which looks as real as can be, caught the attention of Smith who offered high praise.

“I saw this trailer that Morgan Cooper hooked up, it was called Bel-Air,” the actor said on his YouTube page. “This is the first time that I heard something and I was like ‘Yo, that’s an idea that is brilliant.’”
