We may be obsessed with the newer generation of the royal family, but we have a soft spot for the older generation, too.

At least on TV.

Entertainment Weekly has revealed the latest images from the next season of The Crown and we’re as excitable as Her Majesty’s corgis!

For 2 seasons, Queen Elizabeth II has been portrayed by First Man actress Claire Foy and her consort Prince Phillip by former Doctor Who star Matt Smith. The show is taking a new direction in its 3rd season as it fast-forwards to the 1970s when Harold Wilson is Prime Minister and the Queen is middle-aged.

She will be played by Olivia Colman of The Favourite and Phillip by Tobias Menzies from Outlander.

The newly-released pictures include the pair, as well as Ocean’s 8 star Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret — previously played by Vanessa Kirby — and Rogue One actor, Ben Daniels, as her husband Antony Armstrong-Jones who was portrayed by Matthew Goode of Downton Abbey.

The Crown returns to Netflix in 2019.

Netflix executives never had any trouble sending fans of their hit dramas into a frenzy, and they’ve managed to do it once again. They just dropped the first picture of Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip in the new season of The Crown.

The first glimpse at the new Duke of Edinburgh shows him gazing into the distance while standing inside Buckingham Palace. Menzies’ hair’s slicked back to resemble Philip’s and he’s sporting a tax and full royal regalia in the picture. This role previously belonged to Doctor Who star Matt Smith, who received an Emmy nomination for his performance.

Paul Bettany was in talks to play Prince Philip, but he dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. First look at Tobias Menzies in costume proves that didn’t stop Netflix from finding the perfect Duke of Edinburgh. This actor is no stranger to starring in hit TV shows since he previously appeared on Game of Thrones. His career-defining project was critically acclaimed drama Outlander, which brought him a Golden Globe nomination.

The new cast of The Crown also includes Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother and Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles. We can’t wait to see what they bring to the table when the new season premieres next year.

Arise, Tobias Menzies!

As The Crown continues to sweep the controversy of its pay discrepancies under the royal carpet, Netflix has announced just who will be sitting on the throne for the upcoming season.

Claire Foy and Matt Smith have been at the helm for the show’s first 2 seasons as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, respectively.

But with the series-deciding to fast forward a few years in the life of her royal highness, new castings have been finalized for the roles.

Broadchurch actress, Olivia Coleman, had already been confirmed as taking over the role from Miss Foy, with Matt’s replacement now having been announced as Outlander actor, Tobias Menzies.

The pair will fill the roles for seasons 3 and 4 and will be joined by Les Misérables actress, Helena Bonham Carter, as Princess Margaret.

We hope that Netflix sticks to its decree that no one will be paid higher than the Queen.
