Many of the year’s most anticipated films saw the light of day at the Toronto Film Festival, but only one could walk away with the festival’s main award. Cord Jefferson’s feature directorial debut American Fiction was honored with the People’s Choice Award.

Described as “a wicked satire about the commodification of marginalized voices”, American Fiction centers on a respected author Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, whose life turns upside down after he pens a pseudonymous satirical novel out of protest, only to watch it become a surprise bestseller.

Jeffrey Wright plays the lead role, while the supporting cast includes Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Sterling K. Brown, Myra Lucretia Taylor, John Ortiz, Issa Rae, and Adam Brody.

American Fiction is based on Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, and Cord Jefferson was happy to see the audience in Toronto welcome it with open arms.

“My gratitude towards everyone who watched American Fiction [and] discussed it afterwards among friends and colleagues is endless. The film is now in your hands, and I’m so grateful that it was embraced in this way,” Jefferson said in a statement.

Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers was the first runner-up for the People’s Choice Award, followed by the second runner-up – Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, which served as the festival’s opening film.

Ava DuVernay’s Origin will make history as the first film by an African-American woman to play in competition at the Venice Film Festival – and that’s just the beginning! DuVernay will also be in attendance for the gala presentation of her next film at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.

Origin stars Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson. It’s been described as a deeply moving portrait of grief and healing, which sees Wilkerson investigate the genesis of injustice and uncover a hidden truth that affects us all.

In addition to Ellis-Taylor, Origin also stars Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood, and Connie Nielsen.

TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey announced that DuVernay’s new film will be a part of the festival’s lineup this year and said he can’t wait for Toronto audiences to feel its power.

“Ava DuVernay’s Origin is a brilliantly crafted showcase of her talent as a writer, producer, and director. This is audacious filmmaking on a grand, global scale. DuVernay deftly weaves Isabel Wilkerson’s big idea about how we live into a beautiful narrative of passion and discovery,” said Bailey in a statement.

Origin will have its world premiere in Venice on September 6, before heading to Toronto on September 11.

Many of the year’s most anticipated films premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but only one could take the People’s Choice Award home. That honor belonged to Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, his most personal project to date.

TIFF’s People’s Choice Award is voted online by audience members. The Fabelmans managed to defeat Sarah Polley’s Women Talking and Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to take this prestigious accolade home.

Spielberg thanked festival director Cameron Bailey, TIFF staff, and Universal Pictures for making this possible, and gave a special shout-out to the movie fans in Toronto, who made his visit to the festival unforgettable.

“I’m glad I brought this film to Toronto! This is the most personal film I’ve ever made, and the warm reception from everyone in Toronto made my first visit to TIFF so intimate and personal for me and my entire Fabelman family,” said Spielberg in a statement.

TIFF’s People’s Choice Award has long been considered the starting gun in the Oscars race because many of the past recipients went on to win or be nominated for the best picture. In the past ten years alone, 12 Years a Slave, Green Book, and Nomadland won the best picture, while the rest of the winners received nominations for this award.

Fall’s festival season is just around the corner and all the major festivals are slowly unveiling their lineups. The Toronto International Film Festival joined in the fun by announcing the Netflix drama The Swimmers as the opening film at the upcoming event.

Directed by the rising star Sally El Hosaini (My Brother the Devil), the film draws inspiration from a true story of two young sisters who made their way to the 2016 Rio Olympics to compete in swimming after escaping Syria.

TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey described The Swimmers as an exciting, epic journey that marks the arrival of an important filmmaker, adding they’re thrilled to screen it at the festival.

“I was deeply moved by the story of these two sisters and wowed by the storytelling… I’m thrilled that audiences in Toronto will be the first to discover Sally El Hosaini’s remarkable film, and that this year on our Opening Night we can honor everyone who risks everything to reach a better, safer life,” said Bailey.

The 2022 TIFF is taking place between September 8 and 18, with several highly anticipated films premiering at the festival. The lineup currently includes Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Billy Eichner’s Bros, and Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans.

The coming-of-age drama about a young boy growing up in Belfast during the 60s was met with critical acclaim at TIFF and managed to beat tough competition to win the People’s Choice Award. Scarborough and The Power of the Dog were also in the running for this award and they were crowned as first and second runner-up.

What makes TIFF’s People’s Choice Award so significant is the fact it often foreshadowed Academy Award winners for Best Picture. Last year’s winner Nomadland also picked up this award, and so did Green Book and 12 Years a Slave.

Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Bong Joon-ho’s Cannes winner Parasite were first and second runner-ups for this award but failed to win the race. This is quite an impressive feat since the list of this year’s gala presentations also included critically lauded films Hustlers, Joker and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Attendees of the Toronto Film Festival are in charge of picking the winner of the People’s Choice Award by leaving their ticket stubs in voting boxes outside the theatre after each screening. Attendees of the Toronto Film Festival are in charge of picking the winner of the People’s Choice Award by leaving their ticket stubs in voting boxes outside the theatre after each screening. Despite the fact that the voice of the people decides the winners, this award is considered as the tipping point for the Oscars race.

Many of the winners of TIFF’s People’s Choice Award went on to score a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards and even took the big prize – including last year’s honoree Green Book.

Todd Phillips’ Joker is one of the highly-anticipated Oscar hopefuls set to screen at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, and its main star Joaquin Phoenix will be honored with a special Tribute Actor Award at this event.

TIFF co-head Cameron Bailey broke the amazing news in an official press release and said they’re thrilled to be celebrating an artist of his caliber with this inaugural award.

“Displaying both raw instinct and consummate technical skill, Joaquin Phoenix is the complete actor, and one of the finest in contemporary cinema. Over three decades, he has brought a piercing truth to each groundbreaking role,” stated Bailey.

Phoenix will be presented with the TIFF Tribute Actor Award at the Fairmont Royal York on September 9th. Film aficionados that will be attending this festival will be fortunate enough to see his portrayal of DC’s most iconic villain before Joker heads to the theaters on October 4th.

This film also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy, and it will have its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on August 31st, before coming to Toronto.
