]]>Described as “a wicked satire about the commodification of marginalized voices”, American Fiction centers on a respected author Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, whose life turns upside down after he pens a pseudonymous satirical novel out of protest, only to watch it become a surprise bestseller.
Jeffrey Wright plays the lead role, while the supporting cast includes Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Sterling K. Brown, Myra Lucretia Taylor, John Ortiz, Issa Rae, and Adam Brody.
American Fiction is based on Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, and Cord Jefferson was happy to see the audience in Toronto welcome it with open arms.
“My gratitude towards everyone who watched American Fiction [and] discussed it afterwards among friends and colleagues is endless. The film is now in your hands, and I’m so grateful that it was embraced in this way,” Jefferson said in a statement.
Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers was the first runner-up for the People’s Choice Award, followed by the second runner-up – Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, which served as the festival’s opening film.

]]>Origin stars Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson. It’s been described as a deeply moving portrait of grief and healing, which sees Wilkerson investigate the genesis of injustice and uncover a hidden truth that affects us all.
In addition to Ellis-Taylor, Origin also stars Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood, and Connie Nielsen.
TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey announced that DuVernay’s new film will be a part of the festival’s lineup this year and said he can’t wait for Toronto audiences to feel its power.
“Ava DuVernay’s Origin is a brilliantly crafted showcase of her talent as a writer, producer, and director. This is audacious filmmaking on a grand, global scale. DuVernay deftly weaves Isabel Wilkerson’s big idea about how we live into a beautiful narrative of passion and discovery,” said Bailey in a statement.
Origin will have its world premiere in Venice on September 6, before heading to Toronto on September 11.

]]>TIFF’s People’s Choice Award is voted online by audience members. The Fabelmans managed to defeat Sarah Polley’s Women Talking and Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to take this prestigious accolade home.
Spielberg thanked festival director Cameron Bailey, TIFF staff, and Universal Pictures for making this possible, and gave a special shout-out to the movie fans in Toronto, who made his visit to the festival unforgettable.
“I’m glad I brought this film to Toronto! This is the most personal film I’ve ever made, and the warm reception from everyone in Toronto made my first visit to TIFF so intimate and personal for me and my entire Fabelman family,” said Spielberg in a statement.
TIFF’s People’s Choice Award has long been considered the starting gun in the Oscars race because many of the past recipients went on to win or be nominated for the best picture. In the past ten years alone, 12 Years a Slave, Green Book, and Nomadland won the best picture, while the rest of the winners received nominations for this award.

TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey described The Swimmers as an exciting, epic journey that marks the arrival of an important filmmaker, adding they’re thrilled to screen it at the festival.
“I was deeply moved by the story of these two sisters and wowed by the storytelling… I’m thrilled that audiences in Toronto will be the first to discover Sally El Hosaini’s remarkable film, and that this year on our Opening Night we can honor everyone who risks everything to reach a better, safer life,” said Bailey.
The 2022 TIFF is taking place between September 8 and 18, with several highly anticipated films premiering at the festival. The lineup currently includes Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Billy Eichner’s Bros, and Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans.

]]>The coming-of-age drama about a young boy growing up in Belfast during the 60s was met with critical acclaim at TIFF and managed to beat tough competition to win the People’s Choice Award. Scarborough and The Power of the Dog were also in the running for this award and they were crowned as first and second runner-up.
What makes TIFF’s People’s Choice Award so significant is the fact it often foreshadowed Academy Award winners for Best Picture. Last year’s winner Nomadland also picked up this award, and so did Green Book and 12 Years a Slave.
When it comes to the rest of the major winners at TIFF, acting awards went to Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog). Denis Villeneuve walked away with the director award for his work on the sci-fi epic Dune.

]]>Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Bong Joon-ho’s Cannes winner Parasite were first and second runner-ups for this award but failed to win the race. This is quite an impressive feat since the list of this year’s gala presentations also included critically lauded films Hustlers, Joker and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
Attendees of the Toronto Film Festival are in charge of picking the winner of the People’s Choice Award by leaving their ticket stubs in voting boxes outside the theatre after each screening. Despite the fact that the voice of the people decides the winners, this award is considered as the tipping point for the Oscars race.
Many of the winners of TIFF’s People’s Choice Award went on to score a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards and even took the big prize – including last year’s honoree Green Book.
