Todd Phillips’ Joker is one of the highly-anticipated Oscar hopefuls set to screen at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, and its main star Joaquin Phoenix will be honored with a special Tribute Actor Award at this event.

TIFF co-head Cameron Bailey broke the amazing news in an official press release and said they’re thrilled to be celebrating an artist of his caliber with this inaugural award.

“Displaying both raw instinct and consummate technical skill, Joaquin Phoenix is the complete actor, and one of the finest in contemporary cinema. Over three decades, he has brought a piercing truth to each groundbreaking role,” stated Bailey.

Phoenix will be presented with the TIFF Tribute Actor Award at the Fairmont Royal York on September 9th. Film aficionados that will be attending this festival will be fortunate enough to see his portrayal of DC’s most iconic villain before Joker heads to the theaters on October 4th.

This film also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy, and it will have its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on August 31st, before coming to Toronto.
