According to Netflix’s official synopsis, this thriller “centers around a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of a seductive artist accused of murdering his girlfriend, but when burning desire takes hold things get hot… and dangerous.”

Mea Culpa marks Tyler Perry’s fifth Netflix feature, and he’s already working on its follow-up Six Triple Eight, after signing a multi-year first-look deal with the streamer back in October.

Perry drew inspiration for this film from older thrillers from the ‘80s and ’90s and wanted to tackle the idea of exploring the best and worst of humanity through this genre. He found a perfect partner in crime in Kelly Rowland, who came on board as one of the producers, in addition to leading the film alongside Moonlight’s Trevante Rhodes.

Mea Culpa will also star Sean Sagar (The Gentlemen), Nick Sagar (The Princess Switch trilogy), RonReaco Lee (Nappily Ever After), and Shannon Thornton (P-Valley). It will premiere on Netflix on February 23.

Perry previously inked a four-picture deal with Amazon Studios back in 2022, but it seems he’s ready to shift allegiances. He’s been working extensively with Netflix in recent years, and he already released three films with the streamer, with two more on the way: the World War II drama Six Triple Eight and the thriller Mea Culpa.

Netflix finally made their collaboration with Perry official this week, but the rumors about their potential partnership have been around since Endeavor and TKO CEO Ari Emanuel spilled the tea during Bloomberg Media’s Screentime conference this month.

“I’ll wait for them to announce it. But yeah, Netflix has been an incredible partner to work with, and so is Amazon. It’s been really, really, really incredible, and that’s all I’ll say about it,” said Perry during his own Screentime conversation.

Despite his multi-year deal with Netflix, Perry’s ties with Amazon remain strong. His documentary Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story will stream on Amazon Prime Video after having its world premiere at this year’s AFI Fest.

The American Film Institute president and CEO Bob Gazzale released an official statement announcing Maxine’s Baby as the festival’s centerpiece film and had nothing but words of praise for Perry.

“Tyler Perry is a creative force of nature – a multihyphenate who forged his own path to seismic impact in the world of storytelling while also inspiring the next generation to follow in his footsteps. Maxine’s Baby is an epic celebration of a modern maverick,” said Gazzale.

Directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, Maxine’s Baby chronicles the transformative journey of Atlanta-based writer, actor, filmmaker, and media mogul and it’s been described as “a profound lesson on remembering where you came from to know where you want to go.”

This year’s AFI Fest will take place between October 25 and October 29, and a part of the lineup has already been unveiled. Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind will open the festival, while Bradley Cooper’s Maestro will serve as its closing film.

The Netflix film will see Perry write, direct, and star in it. Perry retired Mabel “Madea” Simmons in 2020 with Madea’s Farewell Tour. Her final appearance was in 2019’s A Madea Family Funeral.

“I was done with Madea, completely done with it,” Perry told Variety. But as I’ve been looking at the state of the world — and I finished a tour in January, just before the pandemic started to break in the country — and the amount of joy and laughter that it brought to so many people, that’s what I think is missing. We need that laughter and that joy.”

The film, which plans to debut in 2022, will be shot at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.

Perry announced the news on social media in Madea’s voice saying, “This is Madea saying I’m coming back, and I’m on Netflix and I can’t wait to tell you. I was done,” Perry continues, as Madea interrupts. “But I wasn’t.”

Madea debuted in 1999 during Perry’s play I Can Do Bad All by Myself, where the actor has to step into the actor who was supposed to play Madea couldn’t make it. Her big-screen debut came in 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Over eleven films, the Madea franchise grossed more than $1 billion at the box office.

PAW Patrol, based on the animated Nickelodeon series of the same name, is produced by Spin Master Corp. Paramount Pictures.

The series premiered in 2013 and airs in over 160 countries in 30 languages. It’s in its seventh season and has been renewed for an eighth. The show centers around a young boy named Ryder who leads search-and-rescue dogs that work together on missions to keep the shoreside community of Adventure Bay safe. The dogs, Chase, Marshall, Rubble, Zuma, Rocky, and Skye, live in houses that transform into vehicles for their missions.

The film, which is directed by Cal Brunker and produced by Jennifer Dodge, will focus on Ryder and the pups being called to Adventure City to stop Mayor Humdinger from turning it into a state of chaos.

PAW Patrol is in production with creators, artists, and producers collaborating remotely and it’s set for an August 20, 2021 release date.

Variety reports that Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul will air as a special next year on the network. It will be tapped on January 13 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The concert will feature songs from Franklin’s legendary repertoire.
