The Emmy Awards are just a month away, and we know the name of at least one person set to deliver his acceptance speech at the ceremony. Tyler Perry will receive the Governors Award for his achievements in television and for creating opportunities for marginalized communities.

The Governors Award selection committee chair Eva Basler praised Perry for changing the face of television, pioneering a new brand of storytelling that engages people of color, and inspiring a new generation of content creators.

Tyler Perry thanked the Television Academy for honoring him with this award and said that this recognition stands as a reminder that when the world doesn’t offer you a seat at the table, you can build your own.

“I’m grateful for and humbled by this recognition from the Television Academy. I’ve always prided myself on the work we do at the studio, our diverse representation of people from all walks of life, and the community we’ve built,” said Perry in a statement.

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 20th, with Jimmy Kimmel serving as a host of the virtual ceremony.
