Wicked draws inspiration from the iconic Broadway musical of the same name, loosely based on L. Frank Baum’s seminal novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wicked will be adapted into two films, and the first one is expected to premiere on November 27, 2024.

]]>Wicked tells the untold tale of Glinda and Elphaba, the witches from The Wizard of Oz. The two young witches form an unlikely friendship, but their relationship struggles through opposing personalities and world views and Elphaba’s fall from grace, eventually leading to her becoming the Wicked Witch of the West.
Erivo is set to portray Elphaba, while Grande will play Glinda. Bailey is set to join them in the role of Fiyero, who serves as a love interest for both women. The rest of the cast is yet to be announced.
After Variety broke the news about Bailey’s casting, director Jon M. Chu confirmed it on Twitter, writing, “He’s perfect, they’re perfect. They’d be perfect together. Born to be forever….. I am too excited to pretend this hasn’t been happening. We have a Fiyero!!!! #JonathanBailey #Wicked.”
The two-part adaptation of Wicked isn’t the only exciting project that Bailey has on the way. In addition to being attached to the third season of Bridgerton, he recently joined Showtime’s limited series Fellow Travelers.

]]>Seyfried opened up about the experience of auditioning for a movie version of the beloved musical in an interview with Backstage, saying that she “literally bent over backwards while playing the hardest role of [her] life” just so she could audition for the part.
“I have dreams that I’m still auditioning for Wicked. Last summer while I was playing Elizabeth [on The Dropout], on the weekends I was auditioning in person to play Glinda in the movie version of Wicked – because I wanted it that much,” recalled Seyfried.
It wasn’t all a loss, because this experience showed her how far she came as a singer and taught her that she’s finally prepared for whatever comes next in terms of musicals. Seyfried previously proved her singing abilities in the Mamma Mia! franchise, but said that the role in Les Misérables was what inspired her to do better.
Ariana Grande was eventually cast as Glinda alongside Cynthia Erivo, but losing this role didn’t stop Seyfried’s career from thriving. She recently received her first Emmy nomination for playing Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout.

]]>Elphaba and Galinda may have been able to defy gravity, but getting Wicked into theatres seems to have proven to be a harder task.
The Tony Award-winning musical, based on a retelling of The Wizard of Oz, has been on Broadway since 2003.
A cinematic version has been on the cards since 2004, with The Reader‘s director Stephen Daldry being attached to helm the project (which will include two new songs) in 2016.
The original release date for the film was earmarked for Christmas 2019 (that’s this year, people!) but has now been delayed…
Universal Studios has announced that Wicked will be pushed back a full two years until December 2021. Instead, the studio will be releasing Cats based on another famous musical.
We have no doubt though that when Wicked finally does fly into theatres on December 22nd, 2021 it’s gonna be pop-u-lar!

The alternative story of The Wizard of Oz, which focuses on Elphalba the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, is now seeking to add an Oscar to its list as a film version was announced last month.
But co-creator, Stephen Schwartz, has urged fans to be patient.
“I will tell you 100 percent there will be a movie of Wicked and it won’t be that far away, but it won’t be next year because we’re still writing,” he has said about the film whose original release date was supposedly 20 December 2019.
“That being said, we’re making really good progress. The screenplay has gone through a few drafts. In fact, while I’m out here, I’m going to be seeing Winnie [Holzman] and we’re working on the most recent draft,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
We’re sure the delay is for good.
