“Wicked” Isn’t Flying Into Cinemas Just Yet

Wicked may be able to defy gravity, but it’s having less luck with actually getting its film adaptation on the right route.

The musical premiered on Broadway in 1993 and has won multiple Tonys, as well as a Grammy Award.

The alternative story of The Wizard of Oz, which focuses on Elphalba the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, is now seeking to add an Oscar to its list as a film version was announced last month.

But co-creator, Stephen Schwartz, has urged fans to be patient.

“I will tell you 100 percent there will be a movie of Wicked and it won’t be that far away, but it won’t be next year because we’re still writing,” he has said about the film whose original release date was supposedly 20 December 2019.

“That being said, we’re making really good progress. The screenplay has gone through a few drafts. In fact, while I’m out here, I’m going to be seeing Winnie [Holzman] and we’re working on the most recent draft,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

We’re sure the delay is for good.
