Long before Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee made their treacherous journey into Mordor to destroy the One Ring, there were others. Prior to creating The Lord of the Rings, author J.R.R. Tolkien wrote about the Rings of Power which were made for a select number of Elves, Dwarves, and Men, and it is that story that will be revealed in the upcoming Lord of the Rings series. 

The first official trailer for The Rings of Power was shown at San Diego Comic-Con during a panel hosted by self-confessed LOTR superfan, Stephen Colbert.

“It’s a story of hope and approaching darkness. This being Tolkien, it’s a story of loss,” the talk show host explained. He also quipped that “I don’t know who the hell some of those people are.”

Set during the Second Age, thousands of years before the events we know in The Hobbit and LOTR, the series features Galadriel and Elrond in their youth and depicts the rise of Sauron. Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay and the rest of their team have been working on the series since 2018, spending months going through Tolkien’s appendices and his book The Silmarillion. 

The Rings of Power premieres on Amazon Prime on September 2.

The third season of The Boys is currently airing on Amazon Prime after having premiered on June 3. Even though the season is expected to run for another month, the show has already been picked up for a fourth.

“Speaking for the cast and crew, we’re so grateful to Sony, Amazon, and most of all the fans for embracing the show and allowing us to make more,” said showrunner Eric Kripke following the announcement. “We’re thrilled to continue Butcher and the Boys’ fight against Homelander and the Seven, as well as comment on the insane world we’re living in. In contrast to most streaming shows, episodes of The Boys have dropped on a weekly basis. Season 2 debuted with 891 million minutes of viewing time in 2020, with the global audience over the first 3 days of season 3 increasing by 17%.

“The Boys continues to push boundaries in storytelling while also being relentlessly entertaining and threading the needle on social satire that feels all too real. This stylized world of the series has incredible global reach and the viewership for opening weekend is proof of that,” stated Vernon Sanders who is the head of global television at Amazon Studios.

The show is now in its pre-production stages. TV Line reports that Sherman-Palladino said at a virtual panel during the Woodstock Film Festival that the sets are being built and the costumes are being fitted. The creative teams are also working on the storylines and scripts and readings will begin in December. 

Last week, the series lead actress Rachel Brosnaham who plays the titular Miriam “midge” Maisel also revealed that the production is underway. On her Instagram account, she posted a picture from the production dressing rooms, showing how it’s done in a time of social distancing. “Mask game strong. Hat game stronger,” she wrote. “We’re slowly and safely getting back to it but first costume fitting is in the books Damn, it feels good to be (almost) back.”

Amazon won the rights to the novel following a highly competitive race with multiple bidders. Pretty Things will be produced under Kidman’s Blossom Films production company.

The series originated in a 22-minute animated shorts which looked for funding in Kickstarter. The campaign was a huge success. It raised 11.3 million dollars and became the most-funded television, movie, or animated project in Kickstarter’s history.

Amazon has renewed Undone for a second season. The adult animated series debuted a couple of months ago on the streaming service to strong reviews. 

“It’s been wonderful to share Undone and have people watching become part of the experience as they interpret the show through their own perceptions of reality,” said co-creators Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, “We are thrilled Amazon Studios is giving us the opportunity to keep exploring this world and these characters, and we look forward to seeing where the story takes us next — but since time is a construct, in a way, we already made the second season and you have always been watching it all along!”

Amazon Studios’ co-head of television and COO Albert Cheng added, “We’re so excited for the second season of this wholly unique, visually stunning and critically acclaimed series. The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show will start streaming on November 29th, and it will be followed by the release of a holiday soundtrack. Musgraves will be in a pretty great company with a list of guests that includes Lana Del Rey, Camila Cabello, and Troye Sivan.

The show will feature both classic and original holiday songs, and her main goal is to reinvent the concept of the holiday special, and show the world how magical they can be.

“My vision was to bring my old Christmas album to life visually and create a modern and fashionable, fresh take on a classic format. It’s a nostalgic, Wes Anderson-inspired reimagining of the holidays. It’s heartfelt, funny and, most of all, real,” Musgraves said in a statement.

Kacey Musgraves kicked her year off by winning four Grammys at this year’s ceremony, including the coveted album of the year award for her record Golden Hour. She went on to perform at Coachella and a series of other sold-out venues.

After the hit series about a couple of 20-something best friends who are trying to navigate life in New York came to an end earlier this year after five seasons, Ilana Glazer is venturing into the realm of stand-up specials.

Glazer is heading to Amazon for her new and upcoming first stand-up special titled The Planet Is Burning. The one-hour comedy special was taped yesterday at the White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas. Her Wednesday performance is the final stop of Glazer’s recent stand-up tour of the same name.

The special is directed by Broad City producer Ryan Cunningham.

Glazer recently wrapped False Positive, a psychological horror flick which she wrote, produced and also stars in. 

The Planet Is Burning will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime later this year. 

Glazer announced the news with a video on her Instagram.

The Romanoffs has been in the works since Mad Men ended and it has landed a budget of $50 million for a total of eight episodes.

The highly anticipated anthology is set around the globe and was shot on location in three continents and seven countries. It was written, directed and executive produced by Weiner. 

The Romanoffs features “eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family,” that is the royals who ruled Russia from 1613 until 1917. Amazon Studios announced that it is set to debut on October 12 on Amazon Prime Video. 

The studios also dropped a cryptic trailer that doesn’t actually reveal any footage from the series but does reveals names of stars who will make an appearance including Mad Men alums Christina Hendricks and John Slattery, as well as Aaron Eckhart, Diane Lane, Paul Reiser, Isabelle Huppert, Corey Stoll, Andrew Rannells, Jack Huston and Amanda Peet. Guest stars include Noah Wyle (Falling Skies), Kathryn Hahn (Transparent), Ben Miles (Collateral), Griffin Dunne (Imposters), Ron Livingston (The Conjuring), among others.
