]]>Perry, Luke, Richie, and Seacrest joined American Idol in season 16 when the reality series was revived on ABC following a two-year break.
“The chemistry and passion Katy, Luke, Lionel, and Ryan bring is second to none,” said showrunner Megan Wolflick in a statement. “We couldn’t be more ecstatic that they are returning for this iconic 20th season in search of the freshest new talent that this nation has to offer.”
The 20th season of American Idol will air in the spring of 2022. The search for worthy contestants is set to start on August 6th through virtual auditions.
California-native Chayce Beckham was crowned the winner in season 19, which wrapped up back in May. The show was unable to return to its glory days in terms of viewership, managing to bring between 7 and 8 million viewers per episode. Still, this was enough for ABC to hand it a renewal shortly after the season finale.

Created by Simon Fuller, American Idol started airing on Fox in 2002, completing its original run in 2016 with 15 seasons. Some of the winners include Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze and Trent Harmon. The show had a huge success, being described as “unparalleled in broadcasting history” and “the most impactful show in the history of television”. After some record-breaking numbers, the show saw a decline in ratings following the 2012–13 season which ultimately lead to American Idol being canceled by Fox in 2015. At the beginning of 2017, rumors started circling about the possible revival on NBC or Fox, before ABC stepped in and acquired the rights for the show announcing its return in 2017 – 2018 season.
