The new season of the CW’s Arrow is set to be the final season of the series and it will see the return of an early villain of the green archer – Malcolm Merlyn. As reported by CBR, the show’s lead Stephen Amell confirmed that actor John Barrowman will don the suit of the dark archer once more.

Speaking at Fan Expo Boston 2019, Amell let slip of this fact while telling the fans about a tradition of the crew. Apparently, for Barrowman’s 50th birthday, Amell has delivered a birthday cake while wearing a skimpy bathing suit. According to Amell, this act was set to be repeated every decade. “He’s back in the show in Season 8 and that was actually a rider that he put into his contract.”

Merlyn was the main villain of the show in the 1st season and remained a nuisance and sometimes begrudged ally for Oliver Queen till he was killed off in season 5. But as is frequent in comics-based series in general, and the Arrowverse in particular – death is not an obstacle one cannot overcome.

As some of the biggest shows on the CW come to an end – such as The 100, Supernatural, Arrow, Jane the Virgin, iZombie and Crazy ex-girlfriend – it is interesting to check what the future holds for the youth-oriented network.

The network’s president Mark Pedowitz has spoken about it during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour and hinted a new spinoff of Arrow is not out of the question.

“Nothing is ever 100 percent done. You learn that over time,” said Pedowitz. “We haven’t had a discussion about what that storyline will do as we plot the next generation of DC shows. There is another property we’re looking at for the following season.”

As Arrow has already spread and spawned other spinoffs as The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman it does not seem unlikely that another one is in the making. Pedowitz himself said as much. “Who would have thought it (Arrow) would have spawned a whole universe that they managed to create. It’s quite a remarkable feat,” he said.

The final season of Arrow is almost here and the producers are treating us to glimpses of the new costumes the heroes are going to wear during their fights. One of the characters that will get a new wardrobe is John Diggle (played by David Ramsey).

Earlier this month, teasers of the new costume surfaced on twitter, and now, Marc Guggenheim, a consulting producer of the popular show, confirms it – this is how Spartan is going to look this coming fall:

Another character who will get a new costume is Laurel Lance. The new season marks an upgrade to her hero status and a whole new Black Canary costume. The new costume has yellow accents and piping and fishnets – similar to the character’s garb in the comics. Lanse also loses her long black coat which was one of her identifying characteristics as the Black Siren.

This is how she is going to look:

It’s confirmed — Season Eight of Arrow will be its last.

The news was announced by the series’ executive producers in a joint statement Wednesday.

“This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind,” series executive producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Beth Schwartz said in a statement. “We’re heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come. We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years.”

Arrow, which premiered on The CW in 2012 and was renewed for an eighth season in January, will end with a shortened season consisting of only ten episodes. It is currently the network’s longest-running DC Comics series.

Star of the superhero drama Stephen Amell took to Twitter, writing, “Playing Oliver Queen has been the greatest professional experience of my life… but you can’t be a vigilante forever. Arrow will return for a final run of 10 episodes this Fall. There’s so much to say… for now I just want to say thank you.”

The series also stars David Ramsey, Emily Bett Rickards, Echo Kellum, Katie Cassidy, Rick Gonzalez, Juliana Harkavy, Colton Haynes, Kirk Acevedo, and Sea Shimooka.

CW is putting out a Bat Signal — but not for Bruce Wayne.

The network is developing a series about Batwoman which will form part of its DC Universe that already includes Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Black Lightning, and Legends of Tomorrow.

Batwoman’s alter-ego, Kate Kane, is set to be written as a lesbian, with a casting notice scheduled to be issued soon.

The series has officially been described as follows:

“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope. Based on the characters from DC.”

Caroline Dries of The Vampire Diaries and Greg Berlanti who produces The CW’s other bouquet of superhero shows will serve as executive producers.

Gotham better watch out.
