SZA and Beyoncé have given us some of the best songs of the past year, and they’re getting credit where credit is due. The list of BET Awards winners is in, and the two R&B stars took home three awards, including the coveted album of the year trophy.

SZA and Beyoncé were competing against the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Drake, 21 Savage, DJ Khaled, Chris Brown, and GloRilla for the ceremony’s shiniest trophy. BET voters struggled to make a choice between Beyoncé’s Renaissance and SZA’s SOS and eventually decided to give the album of the year award to both artists.

In addition to tying for this accolade, both singers took home two more trophies. Beyoncé won BET Her Award and Viewer’s Choice Award for her catchy single “Break My Soul”, while SZA was named best female R&B/pop artist and picked up the award for video of the year with “Kill Bill”.

When it comes to the movie categories, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was the biggest winner of the night, defeating the likes of Creed 3, Nope, and The Woman King to be named the best movie. Its star Angela Bassett picked up the award for best actress, while the Snowfall star Damson Idris was named the best actor.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is one of the biggest hip-hop legends of his generation, and he’s set to receive a special honor at the upcoming BET Awards. The hip-hop icon will be bestowed with the honorary BET Lifetime Achievement Award.

Diddy is following in the footsteps of Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige, who received this award reserved for veteran artists who have made notable contributions to the music industry, seen as transformative leaders responsible for shaping the culture through their careers.

BET CEO Scott Mills described Diddy as someone who exemplifies Black excellence, adding that his virtuosity is matched only by his range – from music to media, culture, business, and philanthropy.

“Diddy has always been a pioneering force in our community, breaking barriers, achieving unprecedented heights, blazing new trails, and, in so doing, raising the bar for all of us,” said Mills in a statement.

The 2022 BET Awards are set to take place on June 26 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Taraji P. Henson will return as a host for the second year in a row. Doja Cat topped this year’s list of nominations with a total of six nods, and she was closely followed by Drake and Ari Lennox with four each.

This year’s BET Awards is less than two weeks away, and we finally know who will be hosting the festivities. Taraji P. Henson, who won multiple BET Awards in the past, is set to host the ceremony when it returns to Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

In an official statement announcing her hosting duties, the Empire star described the BET Awards as a “celebration of Black creativity, art, and excellence” and said she’s honored to be a part of this year’s ceremony.

“Returning live, this year’s show will be unlike anything we have ever seen before, and I am honored to be sharing the stage with so many powerful and prolific women in music and entertainment. The BET Awards will once again be at the forefront of Black culture,” said Henson.

The theme of this year’s BET Awards is “Year of the Black Woman”, with Queen Latifah receiving the show’s Lifetime Achievement Award. DaBaby and Megan Thee Stallion topped the list of nominations with seven nods each, while Cardi B and Drake were right behind with five. The BET Awards will take place on June 27th at LA’s Microsoft Theater.

Just a year after the BET Awards became one of the first major awards to occur during the pandemic, the ceremony will be returning on June 27 from the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live and it will be the first to have a live, vaccinated audience.

The show hopes to raise awareness to vaccination. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, BET has been at the forefront of recovery efforts for our community, turning entertainment touchpoints into opportunities to empower our audiences and help combat the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19,” BET president Scott Mills said. “Vaccination rates among Black Americans are significantly lower than other communities. We are committed to using our signature programming event—The BET Awards—to encourage vaccination in our community.”

Last year’s event took place June 28, 2020, and it was the No. 1 cable awards show among adults 18-49 during the 2020 broadcast season. The BET Awards had 3.7 million total viewers and was simulcast live across ViacomCBS networks including BET, BET Her, and for the first time ever CBS. It featured a mix of in-studio host Amanda Seales and pre-produced music performances.

The nominations will be announced at a later date.
