The Disney Legends Awards has been introduced in 1987, and it’s been given to 304 individuals, including this year’s honorees. The list of previous recipients includes Tim Allen, Julie Andrews, Robin Williams, George Lucas, Betty White, Steve Martin, Robert Downey Jr., and many more.
Disney’s D23 Expo is taking place at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, and it will help kick off Walt Disney Company’s 100th-anniversary celebration in 2023.
“For nearly a century, Disney has been entertaining and inspiring people around the world. I can’t wait to give fans a first look at what we have in store for our hundredth anniversary, and how we’re using this occasion to celebrate all the fans and families who have welcomed Disney into their lives,” said Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek in a statement.

]]>Just over a year since the Black Panther actor passed away, Netflix has established a scholarship in his memory.
The bursary, worth $5.4 million, will cover the full cost of a four-year degree at Howard University’s College of Fine Arts where the Oscar nominee himself graduated in 2000.
“It is with immense pleasure and deep gratitude that we announce the creation of an endowed scholarship in honor of alumnus, Chadwick Boseman, whose life and contributions to the arts continue to inspire,” said Howard University President, Wayne A.I. Frederick, M.D. “This scholarship embodies Chadwick’s love for Howard, his passion for storytelling, and his willingness to support future generations of Howard students.”
In tribute to Boseman, the university renamed its College of Fine Arts after him last month.
The Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship will focus on students who exemplify exceptional skills in the arts, with the initial grants being awarded to one recipient in each class starting this academic year.

]]>Howard University also shared a video on YouTube that shows lettering being installed on the entry of Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts.
“An icon in his own right who has left an immeasurable legacy for the next generation. Thank you Mr. Boseman,” wrote the university in the caption of the clip.
Boseman graduated from Howard University in 2000, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in directing. During his time as a student, Boseman notably protested the university’s decision to scrap the College of Fine Arts and integrate it into the College of Arts & Sciences. This decision was eventually reversed in 2018.
Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020 at the age of 43. His most notable works include the role of T’Challa/Black Panther in Marvel Cinematic Universe, action thriller 21 Bridges, war drama Da 5 Bloods, and biographical musical Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. For his work on the latter movie, Boseman won Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Movie, and Screen Actors Guild awards for Best Actor while picking up an Academy Awards nomination in the same category.

]]>The film is based on August Wilson’s award-winning play of the same name and tells the story of trailblazing blues artist Ma Rainey, played by Viola Davis. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom takes place in 1927 Chicago and the musicians deal with race, music, relationships, and Black recording artists being exploited.
Boseman played Ma’s band member Levee, a trumpeter who strives to find his own place in the Chicago music scene by giving old-fashioned songs a contemporary spin.
George C. Wolfe, who won Tony Awards for directing Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk, helmed the film. Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, and Michael Potts are also in the cast. Todd Black, Denzel Washington, and Dany Wolf produced the film with Ruben Santiago-Hudson screenwriting it.
The late Boseman was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016, which progressed to stage 4. During much of his film career, he worked through his treatment and he never spoke publicly about his diagnosis.
There are talks that Boseman may be the first actor to be nominated for two posthumous Oscar actor nods—one for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and the other for Da 5 Bloods.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set for a December 18 release date on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.

]]>According to a statement shared by Boseman’s family, he’s been battling colon cancer since 2016, but kept his struggle private as he delivered one amazing performance after another against all odds.
“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther,” reads the official statement by Boseman’s family.
Boseman’s former Marvel co-stars, including Chris Evans, Brie Larson, and Angela Bassett, assembled to bid him farewell and posted touching tributes on social media. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, called his passing “absolutely devastating” and had nothing but words of praise for the late actor.
“He was our T’Challa, our Black Panther, and our dear friend. Each time he stepped on set, he radiated charisma and joy, and each time he appeared on screen, he created something truly indelible… The Marvel Studios family deeply mourns his loss, and we are grieving tonight with his family,” said Feige in a statement.
Chadwick Boseman got his big break with the role of baseball legend Jackie Robinson in 42 and went on to play several important historical figures, including James Brown and Thurgood Marshall. ]]>Yasuke arrived to Japan in 1579, serving under Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano. Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga expressed an interest in this newcomer, and asked Valignano to leave him behind. Yasuke eventually went on to become the first African man to ever become a samurai.
In an official press release, Chadwick Boseman said he’s excited to be a part of this project, written by Doug Miro. He described Yasuke as not just an action movie, but a cultural event, because it will shine the light on one of history’s best kept secrets.
This won’t be the first time we’ll get to see Boseman portraying an important historical figure. He also played Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in Get On Up, and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall.

The Marvel’s film also got a nomination for best motion picture alongside BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Street Could Talk, The Hate U Give and Crazy Rich Asians.
Notable artists, including Cardi B, who had a great year in the music scene, were conspicuously left out. The award ceremony, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year will be held on March 30 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and will be aired live on TV One.

The role in his latest project will take him on a much darker path. Boseman will play a disgraced NYPD detective looking for redemption after being thrust into a manhunt for a cop killer.
Adam Fogelson, chairman of the studio STXfilms, described 17 Bridges as a “race-against-the-clock crime-drama” and said they assembled a dream team to bring this story to life.
“Chadwick Boseman’s razor-sharp instincts and undeniable charisma captivated millions of people around the world in Black Panther, and Joe and Anthony Russo have breathed a new energy into the action genre with films like Avengers: Infinity War,” said Fogelson.
STXfilms was launched only four years ago, but it’s already shaping out to be a success story. Their mission is to make medium-budget, star-driven content, and that’s exactly what they’ve been doing so far. 17 Bridges is only one of a dozen promising projects they’re developing right now, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store in the future.

]]>When he received the award for his starring role in the recent Black Panther Marvel sensation, he decided to give it to someone that he believed deserved it more: “Thank you to the fans – you made this movie special. You made this moment special,” Boseman said when he received the honor. “When Black Panther came out, [director] Ryan Coogler and I wanted to make sure that we did a movie that everybody could embrace. So thank you so much for what you did.”
Boseman then added: “Receiving an award for playing a superhero is amazing, but it’s even greater to acknowledge the heroes that we have in real life.”
“So I just want to acknowledge somebody who’s here today – James Shaw Jr. If you don’t know James Shaw Jr., he fought off a gunman in Antioch, Tennessee, at a Waffle House to save lives.”
Boseman then invited Shaw Jr. up on stage. Shaw Jr. disarmed a gunman during a shooting at Waffle House in Nashville, Tennessee, consequently saving lives. “So, this is gonna live at your house,” Boseman said and then presented his award to the real-life hero.

Black Panther was first featured in Captain America: Civil War and the stand-alone movie picks up after those events. We will see T’Challa / Black Panther returning to his nation of Wakanda after his father’s death, only to find that his sovereignty is being questioned. Black Panther now has to team up with CIA agents and try to defeat his enemies prevent a big war from happening.
As in all Marvel movies, this one will also have some characters from the Marvel Universe making an appearance. So far we know that Martin Freeman returns as Everett K. Ross (seen in Captain America: Civil War) while Andy Serkis will portray Ulysses Klaue from Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Black Panther is scheduled for release on February 18, 2018.
