According to its official synopsis, May December centers on a married couple with a large age gap buckling under the pressure when a Hollywood actress meets them to do research for a film about their past, twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation.

In addition to Portman and Moore, May December also stars Charles Melton, D.W. Moffett, Piper Curda, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung, and Cory Michael Smith.

May December had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, where it was competing for Palme d’Or and was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews. It will also serve as the opening film at the New York Film Festival on September 29.

Netflix acquired North American distribution rights for May December in Cannes for $11 million. They’re planning to give this Oscar hopeful a limited theatrical release on November 17 before it becomes available on their streaming service on December 1.

According to the official logline shared by Deadline, this road trip comedy follows a breakout K-pop group mistakenly stranded in Waco, Texas, days before they’re set to make their American debut at Madison Square Garden.

“Left with no phones, no money, and no transportation, the group must overcome their differences and a host of crazy obstacles to make it to New York City. Along the way, they learn to love Texas, and Texas learns to love them back,” reads the film’s logline.

South Korean filmmaker JK Youn is set to direct the film, and the current draft of the script was written by Karen McCullah & Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith.

The Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson most recently appeared in the Netflix comedy Senior Year, and she’s currently attached to The Almond and the Seahorse. Charles Melton is best known for playing Reggie Mantle in Riverdale, and his credits also include The Sun Is Also a Star, Bad Boys for Life, and Mainstream.

Carson and Melton have joined Purple Hearts, adapted from Tess Wakefield’s novel by Kyle Jarrow and Liz Garcia.

The story of two star-crossed lovers—aspiring singer-songwriter Cassie and military man Luke, will be directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum. The two, fall hopelessly in love, despite their differences. 

“Purple Hearts provides hope that two people with such differing world views, stuck in the same place, forced to fight the same fight, might be able to learn a little about each other’s beliefs, get over their own bullshit, start to understand each other and just maybe fall in love. It’s a very timely, emotional story — truly a romance for the ages,” said Rosenbaum. 

Producer Elysa Dutton added, “Purple Hearts is a celebration of music, humanity and heart. This is a timely love story about two people who come together in spite of their differences and against all odds. We are confident this story will resonate with audiences around the world and anyone who has ever been in love.”
