We’ve seen Oppenheimer dominate several ceremonies since the start of awards season, and it’s showing no signs of stopping! Christopher Nolan’s latest film exploded at the Critics’ Choice Awards and took home eight awards by the end of the night, including best picture.

Oppenheimer was one of the films competing for the coveted best picture trophy, and it defeated the likes of American Fiction, Barbie, The Color Purple, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things, and Saltburn to take it home.

It also came out victorious in seven more categories – best director (Nolan), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), best acting ensemble, best cinematography, best editing, best score, and best visual effects.

Barbie was right behind with six awards, after coming into the night with 18 nods. Most notably, it won the award for best comedy, beating tough competition in American Fiction, Bottoms, The Holdovers, No Hard Feelings, and Poor Things.

FX’s The Bear and Netflix’s Beef led the way on the TV side, with four awards each, including the best comedy series and best limited series, respectively. The final season of HBO’s Succession was right behind with three awards, including the best drama series.

The 2024 Critics’ Choice Awards took place on January 14 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, with Chelsea Handler hosting for the second time.

Chelsea Handler did a pretty good job hosting the latest edition of the Critics’ Choice Awards, and she’s gearing up for another ride. The famous comedienne will serve as the host for the second year in a row when the Critics’ Choice Awards return this winter.

Handler took over from the four-time host Taye Diggs at the most recent Critics’ Choice Awards ceremony, and she can’t wait to give it another go.

“I am very happy and excited to be hosting the Critics Choice Awards again this year, as last year was one of the most fun nights I’ve had. There is no greater reward than making fun of actors and then getting d—- with them afterward. It’s an honor,” said Handler in a statement.

Handler is best known as the host of her talk shows Chelsea Lately on the E! and Chelsea on Netflix. She went on to appear in several comedy specials and most recently guest-hosted The Daily Show following Trevor Noah’s departure.

The 29th Critics Choice Awards will take place on January 14, 2024, and will air live on The CW. Nominations in the TV field will be announced on December 5, while the contenders in the film categories are set to be unveiled on December 13.

Shortly after the nominations for the Golden Globes awards were announced last week, another major organization quickly followed suit. The Critics’ Choice Association is the latest to announce the list of contenders for this year’s ceremony, led by Mank and Minari.

Both movies are in the running for the biggest award of the night—best picture—together with Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, News of the World, Nomadland, One Night in Miami, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

David Fincher’s Mank, which chronicles the behind-the-scenes drama of the cinematic masterpiece Citizen Kane, is in the running for a total of 12 awards. Its stars Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried got nods in acting categories, while Fincher is nominated for directing the film.

When it comes to Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari, the Critics Choice Awards voters gave it 10 nominations. Most notably, this moving drama about a Korean family starting a new life in rural America is in the running for best foreign film, best acting ensemble, and best direction.

Critics’ Choice Awards are less than two weeks away, and we already know who’ll be picking up one of the biggest honors of the night. Eddie Murphy is set to receive the lifetime achievement award at this ceremony.

Critics’ Choice Association praised the veteran comedian for being the most commercially successful African-American actor in the movie business history and one of the top-five box-office performers of all time.

Eddie Murphy kicked off his career back in the ‘80s, as one of the cast members of Saturday Night Live and went on to star in a series of box office hits, including Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, and The Nutty Professor.

He returned to the spotlight this year, with the role in Rudy Ray Moore biopic Dolemite Is My Name, and his performance received universal praise from the critics. Murphy is in the running for the Best Actor award at this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards, but he also scored several other major nominations for his lead turn in this movie.

Critics’ Choice Awards will take place on January 12th, and The Irishman tops the list of nominations with a total of 14 nods.

Roma is one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year, so it doesn’t come as a surprise to hear it topped the list of winners at this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards. Alfonso Cuarón’s black and white masterpiece scooped four shinny trophies by the end of the night.

Roma won in four categories: best picture, director, cinematography and foreign film. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Cuarón picking up these same awards at a couple more awards ceremonies, since he’s a front runner in at least two of these categories.

When it comes to TV, last season of The Americans came out swinging, and ended up winning a total of three awards. Same goes for critically beloved comedy series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which went against tough competition to win three trophies.

Just like every other awards ceremony, Critics’ Choice Awards also brought a couple of pleasant surprises – most notably, two ties! Glenn Close and Lady Gaga shared the podium while accepting best actress award, and Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette did the same after scoring a win for best actress in a limited series.

This year’s Critics Choice Awards will take place on March 7th, with Taye Diggs hosting the ceremony.
