The duo tried to defend their subject matter choice and claimed that “It’s an ugly and painful history, but we all think this is a reason to talk about it, not a reason to run from it. And this (the show) feels like a potentially valuable way to talk about it.”

The project was already on hiatus since 2018 when Benioff and Weiss were signed by Disney and Lucasfilm to create the new Star Wars trilogy. This project was also dropped since then but Benioff and Weiss will still be busy with their huge deal with Netflix.

The Emmy-winning pair recently signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix and decided to step away from the Star Wars saga after feeling they could not do justice to both projects.

“We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything,” read a statement released by the duo.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy described Benioff and Weiss as “incredible storytellers” and said they’re looking forward to including them in their Star Wars journey once their busy schedule clears up.

Even with plans for this trilogy falling through, fans of Star Wars have nothing to worry about. Lucasfilm still has many exciting projects in store, including a new trilogy developed by Rian Johnson and a new film with Marvel Cinematic Universe producer Kevin Feige at the helm.

Now, David Benioff and DB Weiss, are finally giving their answers. In an interview with Star Channel, the duo addressed the infamous incident in which a coffee cup was seen on a table in Winterfell during a scene in episode 4 of the season.

“It’s like in Persian rugs it’s tradition that you make a little mistake when making the rug because only God can do anything perfect, so for us I guess that just was our mistake,” said Benioff.

Weiss added: “That’s why I put the coffee cup there. It was a conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection.”

Setting the joke aside, Benioff said that at first, he couldn’t believe it has happened. “It was kind of embarrassment, because how did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot? And then, eventually, it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now,” he said.

Now, the couple is in the market for a new deal and several networks seem to be interested. According to reports, one of the more probable networks is Disney as Benioff and Weiss are already doing a Star Wars movie for them. It is possible that the couple will sign an all over deal with FX/Disney that will give them the opportunity to create both movies and TV series.

Other possibilities are Netflix and Amazon Studios, both are in the market for new hit franchises. According to the reports, Benioff and Weiss are looking for a 200 million dollars deal.

Regardless of where they would end up their former bosses wish them the best.  “Any place that they end up at would be lucky to have them,” HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys told Deadline at TCA earlier this week.

This trilogy is supposed to be separate from the original saga and also from another trilogy that will be helmed by Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson.

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since.” said Benioff and Weiss in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

Obviously, Disney is looking to expand the world of Star Wars even further. The ninth film of the Skywalker saga should begin with the production soon, while the second movie in Anthology series titled Solo: A Star Wars Story is set for release in May 2018.

Also, there are plans for yet untitled third Anthology film which should be released at some point in 2020. Although Disney is yet to confirm the plot details for this movie, it is rumored that it will focus on bounty hunter Boba Fett. Besides all the confirmed movies, there are also rumors that the studio is considering other spinoffs including the ones about Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jabba the Hutt.

Nichelle Tramble Spellman (Justified, The Good Wife) and Malcolm Spellman (Empire) will join the show as writers, while Game of Thrones producers Carolyn Strauss and Bernadette Caulfield are attached to the project as executive producers.

“As the brilliant Game of Thrones winds down to its final season, we are thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with Dan and David, knowing that any subject they take on will result in a unique and ambitious series.” said Casey Bloys, president of HBO Programming. “Their intelligent, wry and visually stunning approach to storytelling has a way of engaging an audience and taking them on an unforgettable journey.
