The last season of Game of Thrones was polarizing, to say the least, and gathered a lot of criticism. In the months that passed since the finale, many of the actors have stepped up to defend the way the show ended but the showrunners, who were the targets for most of the criticism, kept quiet.

Now, David Benioff and DB Weiss, are finally giving their answers. In an interview with Star Channel, the duo addressed the infamous incident in which a coffee cup was seen on a table in Winterfell during a scene in episode 4 of the season.

“It’s like in Persian rugs it’s tradition that you make a little mistake when making the rug because only God can do anything perfect, so for us I guess that just was our mistake,” said Benioff.

Weiss added: “That’s why I put the coffee cup there. It was a conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection.”

Setting the joke aside, Benioff said that at first, he couldn’t believe it has happened. “It was kind of embarrassment, because how did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot? And then, eventually, it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now,” he said.
