Lee and Washington have been plotting their next collaboration since last spring but briefly tabled the idea in the face of the Hollywood disputes last year. This marks their first collaboration since Inside Man in 2006 and fifth overall, following the success of Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Mo’ Better Blues.
High and Low will also reunite Washington with A24 and Apple Original Films for the second time, following the success of The Tragedy of Macbeth. A24 developed the film alongside Escape Artists and Mandalay Pictures, and they’ll handle its theatrical release before its global launch on Apple TV+.
Spike Lee is coming on board as one of the executive producers through 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks banner, in addition to directing this project and co-writing it with Alan Fox.

]]>The Carthaginian warrior Hannibal went down in history as a skilled military tactician. He’s best known for invading Italy by crossing the Alps atop North African elephants, and his victories against the Roman Empire became the stuff of legends.
According to the film’s official logline, this historical epic is “based on real-life warrior Hannibal, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history” and it covers the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.
Playing Hannibal is a realization of a lifelong dream for Washington, who decided to put it on the back burner for 20 years because he didn’t want to be away from his kids for too long. The three-time Oscar nominee and Gladiator scribe John Logan will be in charge of writing the script, while Antoine Fuqua is on board as the director. His collaboration with Washington kicked off with Training Day in 2001 and they most recently teamed up for the Equalizer franchise.

]]>Washington’s casting in this film is a huge deal since he’s famously picky about his projects. Deadline reported that he initially read the script and agreed to meet with Scott after being impressed by the role he wrote with him in mind. Washington officially came on board after being impressed by Scott’s pitch.
Washington and Scott already showed the world that they’re a match made in heaven all the way back in 2007. Washington starred in Scott’s crime drama American Gangster, which grossed $265 million worldwide. He also appeared in several films by the director’s late brother Tony Scott, including Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, Deja Vu, The Taking of Pelham 123, and Unstoppable.
Washington will be in pretty good company on the set of The Gladiator sequel since the cast also includes the recent Oscar nominees Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan. The film’s release date has recently been announced, and it will hit the theatres on November 22, 2024, just ahead of Thanksgiving.
