Something wicked this way comes, because Joel Coen just dropped the first trailer for his Shakespearean movie The Tragedy of Macbeth. The black and white adaptation stars Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, and it’s as intense as it gets.

Based on one of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays, The Tragedy of Macbeth centers on a Scottish lord who receives a prophecy that he’ll soon become the next King of Scotland. His ambitious wife supports him in his attempts to seize power, but his guilt comes to haunt him down the line.

Macbeth has been adapted on countless occasions in the past, but Joel Coen probably felt quite strongly that he has something new to bring to the table. The Tragedy of Macbeth will be the first movie that he directed solo, without his brother and filmmaking partner Ethan Coen.

In addition to Washington and McDormand in the leads, this movie will also star Corey Hawkins, Moses Ingram, Brendan Gleeson, and Harry Melling. The atmospheric first trailer doesn’t reveal much of the plot, but we’ll learn more about it after its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. The Tragedy of Macbeth will have a limited release in theaters on December 25th, before heading to Apple TV+ on January 14th.
