As it turns out, the overwhelmingly negative reactions to the series finale are the main reason why Dexter is making a return. This was revealed by the show’s star Dexter Michael C. Hall during an appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour.

“I think the way the series proper ended has a great deal to do with why we are revisiting this show,” said C. Hall. “A lot of what was mystifying to people is … what creates the appetite that we hope to satisfy now.”

Hall admitted that the series lacked closure and left the audience wondering what happened to Dexter at the end.

“A big part of our motivation is to definitively answer the question of what happened to this guy,” he added.

Still, fans of Dexter shouldn’t expect more of the same. According to showrunner Clyde Phillips, the new episodes will represent a “whole new imagining of the show.”

Dexter originally had an eight-season run from 2006 to 2013, focusing on the forensic technician Dexter Morgan who hunts down those that escape justice and kills them. The series was one of Showtime’s biggest hits while also proving popular with the critics and earning 24 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations.

The 10-episode revival, which will see several other original cast members returning alongside Hall, is set to premiere in November.

“It’s come up in different forms,” Hall said about the revival at Comic-Con. “It never felt quite right in terms of the story that was presented or in terms of the timing. But, I think, along with everybody on this panel and along with everybody who’s ever watched the show and is a fan of the show, I myself have also wondered what the hell happened to this guy. And I think enough has time has passed and the storytelling opportunities were a lot more interesting for having more time between the end and now.”

In the new episodes, Dexter isn’t living the solitary, lonely life the show ended with, instead, he’s started a new life as Jim Lindsay, an alias that’s an ode to the man who wrote the books on which the show is based off. But in the trailer, we see Dexter carrying a leather knife around him, so he seems to be up to his old ways.

The show will be executive produced by Phillips, Hall, John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Bill Carraro, and Scott Reynolds.
