The series is being developed under the working title Drop-Off, and it centers on a working mother Julia (Kemper), who’s trying to balance work and parenting with the help of her new friends Calvin and Liz. In addition to Kemper, the pilot will also star Karan Soni as Calvin.

ABC describes Drop-Off as “a comedy for anybody who’s dropped their kids at school, breathed a sigh of relief … then realized it’s Sunday.” Julieanne Smolinski wrote the pilot, while Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) will come on board as a director.

Drop-Off draws inspiration from a British television sitcom, which won a BAFTA TV Award for the best scripted comedy. It explored the trials and traumas of a group of middle-class mothers in London and starred Anna Maxwell Martin, Lucy Punch, Diane Morgan, Paul Ready, Philippa Dunne, and Tanya Moodie.

Drop-Off would mark the first lead TV role for Kemper since Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt ended its run in 2020, after bringing her two Emmy nominations for her performance.

Happiness for Beginners is based on Katherine Center’s novel of the same name. According to its official logline, this film centers on Helen, who signs up for a wilderness survival course a year after getting divorced and discovers that you have to get really lost in order to find yourself.

In addition to Kemper, this project will also star Luke Grimes (Yellowstone), Nico Santos (Crazy Rich Asians), and Blythe Danner (I’ll See You in My Dreams). Vicky Wight, whose previous projects include The Lost Husband and The Volunteer, will be in charge of directing the film.

Kemper is best known for her roles on The Office and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but she’s no stranger to the rom-com genre. She famously starred in Bridesmaids along with Kristen Wiig and  Melissa McCarthy, and also appeared in romantic comedies Laggies, Sex Tape, and They Came Together.

Guest host Ellie Kemper welcomed her former The Office co-stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, on Monday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The episode served as a mini reunion for the three and as a great opportunity to talk whether they would ever do a reboot or reunion of the hit show. 

“I would not do an Office reboot but I would love to do a reunion special,” Fischer told Kemper. “I would like to get us all together again.”

But her co-stars Kemper and Kinsey are more than willing.

“I would do anything they called me to do. So if you want to call me, I’m around,” Kinsey said.

“I’m with you, Angela!” Kemper added.

Archie Yates, who made his big-screen debut in historical satire Jojo Rabbit, will be in charge of portraying the main role in this project. We still don’t know much about this reboot, so it’s unclear if he’ll play Kevin or an entirely new character.

When Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced their idea to give Home Alone a reboot treatment, he described it as reimagining for “a new generation”. They’re also considering doing the same with some of the other family-friendly franchises from the Fox library, including Night at the Museum and Cheaper by the Dozen.

The Netflix series, co-created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, stars Ellie Kemper as 29-year-old Kimmy who moves to New York City in an attempt to restart her life after being kept in a bunker for 15 years by a crazy preacher.

The show has received 16 Emmy nominations since its inception in 2015, including nods for the titular actress.

But, worry not fans, Deadline has reported that Kimmy and her friends will go off with a big movie-length bang! Fey and Carlock are expected to write the movie once work has concluded on the upcoming 4th season.

The final season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will be shown in two parts, with the initial six episodes premiering on the 30th of May, and the remaining seven at a later date.

When asked how she wanted the series to end, Kemper told E! Online, “I would want to see her with a lot of friends and doing stuff that makes her happy because she deserves that after having such a tumultuous time.”
