]]>Elphaba and Galinda may have been able to defy gravity, but getting Wicked into theatres seems to have proven to be a harder task.
The Tony Award-winning musical, based on a retelling of The Wizard of Oz, has been on Broadway since 2003.
A cinematic version has been on the cards since 2004, with The Reader‘s director Stephen Daldry being attached to helm the project (which will include two new songs) in 2016.
The original release date for the film was earmarked for Christmas 2019 (that’s this year, people!) but has now been delayed…
Universal Studios has announced that Wicked will be pushed back a full two years until December 2021. Instead, the studio will be releasing Cats based on another famous musical.
We have no doubt though that when Wicked finally does fly into theatres on December 22nd, 2021 it’s gonna be pop-u-lar!

]]>Boyle won the academy award for Best Director for the film Slumdog Millionaire, which made over $380 million against a $15 million budget and received overall positive reviews from movie critics. Afterwards, he directed the 2010 survival film,127 Hours starring James Franco, which made $60 million against an $18 million budget. The film was praised for Franco’s portrayal of Aron Ralston, who needed to amputate his arm after he was stuck against a boulder.
Boyle has met with MGM and Eon, but no official offer has been made. Furthermore, Variety noted that Boyle was in talks to direct Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015) before Sam Mendes helmed both films.
The James Bond film series is based on MI6 agent James Bond code-named “007” which was written by Ian Fleming. It is one of the longest movie franchises in history starting from 1962, Dr. No starring Sean Connery as James Bond, to 2015, Spectre starring Daniel Craig starring James Bond.

]]>During an interview on Thursday with Entertainment Tonight, the Red Sparrow actress announced that she plans on taking a year off from acting in films.
Lawrence wants to work with an organization called Represent.Us, a non-profit organization whose mission is to “to pass tough anti-corruption laws in cities and states across America, and end the legalized corruption that has come to define modern politics.” Lawrence told Entertainment Tonight that “It doesn’t have anything to do with partisan [politics].” This specific move aligns with Lawrence’s past initiatives including her involvement in The Women’s March and being a voice for the women of Hollywood; advocating for equal and fair pay for both women and men in the film industry.
However, according to her representative, Lawrence will still be acting in films throughout the year. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence’s representative stated that she “will return to work when one of [her] several projects in development is ready to go.”
In the meantime, Red Sparrow hits theaters March 2, 2018.

]]>The film, which is directed by Ryan Coogler, centers on T’Challa aka Black Panther and his life in Wakanda. The film explores the challenges T’Challa must face as King of Wakanda. It stars Chadwick Boseman as the title role as well as Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.
On Saturday, Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), The label representing Kendrick Lamar and SZA, along with Interscope Records decided to give back to the community and held three screenings of Marvel’s Black Panther for the youth of the Watts neighborhood, located in South Los Angeles.
According to Variety, the three screenings of the film were held at the Nickerson Garden Projects, Jordan Downs Projects, and Imperial Courts Projects. This was among the many initiatives to allow fans to see the film without ‘breaking the bank’.
Marvel’s Black Panther is now in theaters in the United States and internationally.

]]>However, thanks to the massive success of the film Girls Trip, studios are starting to reconsider their previous notions. Movie fans have spoken loud and clear; diversity is a key factor drawing them into theater seats (and drawing money out of their wallets).
The film, financed by Universal Studios, revolves around a group of four friends who take a trip to New Orleans for a week of wild, hilarious partying. The A-list cast certainly added to the star power of the film, with Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, and up-and-coming breakthrough comedian Tiffany Haddish starring in the film’s lead roles.
How did studio execs know the movie was destined to defy the odds? Universal president of domestic distribution Nick Carpou acknowledged the stereotypes head-on. Carpou noted that while it was true that Hollywood had a historically distant relationship with African-American leads, he believed that audiences were beginning to actively value diversity in a way that transcends those outdated beliefs.
“Girls Trip is a bold film,” he said, “The characters are highly relatable, and the story speaks a universal language.”
While black-led films (as well as live-action comedies) are often notorious for receiving low critical acclaim, it seems the A-plus casting and gut-busting writing set Girls Trip apart from the crowd. In the last year, many black-led films such as Get Out, Moonlight, and Hidden Figures have been making waves at the box office and in review columns, setting a precedent of appreciating diversity in all genres of film.
Hollywood’s evolving attitudes paved the way for Girls Trip, which brought in a whopping $30.4 million upon its debut, the best start an R-rated comedy has seen in years.
