Swords, fire, and dragons—oh my!

The Targaryens have always been a family with a complicated history, but we didn’t realize the extent until viewing the official trailer for House of the Dragon.

In just a month we shall be returning to Westeros—albeit a couple of hundred years in the past—as the Game of Thrones spin-off covers the events that lead up to the Targaryen civil war.

Family politics come into play as reigning King Viserys I shares his dream of placing his heir on the Iron Throne. The candidates for the coveted position are his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, and his younger brother, Prince Daemon.

“No queen has ever sat on the Iron Throne,” the King is reminded by his Master of Laws, Lyonel Strong. “The king has an heir—Daemon Targaryan.”

Viserys responds by declaring, “I will not be made to choose between my brother and my daughter.“

Although the rightful heir, it is a sign of the times that Rhaenyra is told how it is the order of things for women not to inherit the crown.

“War is afoot” as the trailer promises.

Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon premieres on August 21 on HBO, with Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’arcy, Olivia Cook, and Rhys Ifans making up the cast.

Fans of HBO’s epic fantasy series Game of Thrones are in for a treat as the network decided to tap into the world of Westeros once again. Actually, several more times.

HBO is reportedly developing three additional Game of Thrones spinoffs on top of the already confirmed prequel House of the Dragon. The new shows are also expected to explore the stories that took place before the events of the original series.

The first in line is 9 Voyages (Sea Snake) will follow famed Westeros sea adventurer Lord Corlys Velaryon. He had the largest fleet of ships in all of the Seven Kingdoms and was the head of a house even wealthier than Lannister.

9 Voyages made the biggest progress among the three series, having already tapped Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist) as writer and creator. The remaining two, Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships, are believed to be still in the “idea” phase.

Flea Bottom would likely focus on the poorest district in King’s Landing of the same name. 10,000 Ships, on the other hand, could tell the story of Princess Nymeria and her journey from Rhoyne to Dorne.

Even if all three shows get the green light, it will be a while before they actually get going. HBO is currently focused on House of the Dragon, which already has a pilot in-store and should start filming in the coming months.

The series will tell the story of the Targaryen civil war and is set around 200 years before the events of in the original series. The cast includes Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Matt Smith.

George R.R. Martin tells fans what to expect in HBO’s forthcoming Game of Thrones prequel series.

Author of the GoT source novels and prequel executive producer finally provides fans some insights into the still-untitled project. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that the Starks are in, but the Lannisters are out.

“The Starks will definitely be there,” he said. “Obviously the White Walkers are here — or as they’re called in my books, ‘The Others’ — and that will be an aspect of it. There are things like direwolves and mammoths.”

“The Lannisters aren’t there yet, but Castlery Rock is certainly there; it’s like the Rock of Gibraltar,” he said. “It’s actually occupied by the Casterlys — for whom it’s still named after in the time of Game of Thrones.”

The show takes place roughly 5,000 years before the events in GoT and chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes to the rise of the White Walkers and the near-destruction of man.

The pilot from Jane Goldman is currently filming in Northern Ireland.

They join previously announced Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, Toby Regbo, and Miranda Richardson.

The drama pilot hails from GoT co-executive producer George R.R. Martin and writer Jane Goldman. Goldman will also serve as showrunner and the two will also exec produce.

“Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour,” the logline reads. “And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

Back in November, Martin told Entertainment Tonight, “Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.”

Production is set to start this summer.

There have always been some similarities between Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. Both explore mythical worlds with fantastical creatures, include grand battle scenes, bloodshed, and magic.

And now they have another commonality to add to the list: Miranda Richardson.

The Churchill star played Rita Skeeter in the series about the boy who lived and has now been cast in the prequel to the HBO series.

The idea from Kingsman: The Golden Circle screenwriter, Jane Goldman, has been described as taking place thousands of years before the Westeros we know and will not feature any of the characters we’ve come to know during Thrones’ eight seasons.

Richardson will be joining a cast that already includes Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo.

She best gear up for a long night…

Before there was Game of Thrones, there was… Well, we’re not too sure. And neither, apparently, is George R.R. Martin.

With the epic show based on Martin’s series A Song of Ice and Fire ending after its eighth season, HBO announced that a prequel would be produced.

It was confirmed in October that an idea from Kingsman: The Secret Service producer, Jane Goldman, would be going to pilot, starring Naomi Watts of The Book of Henry.

At the time, the author was so excited that he wrote on his blog: “Casting is now underway for THE LONG NIGHT, the first of the GAME OF THRONES successor series to ordered to film. HBO has just announced the first cast member: NAOMI WATTS is coming on board as one of our stars. I could not be more excited. Welcome to Westeros, Naomi.”

But after his slip of finger, Martin is saying “not so fast.”

In another post, the author has now said, “Oh, I should also mention … HBO has informed me that the Jane Goldman pilot is not (yet) titled THE LONG NIGHT. That’s is certainly the title I prefer, but for the moment the pilot is still officially UNTITLED. So… mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa. Elsewise, the pilot is coming along well, with casting falling into place. I could tell you more, but I am not supposed to. We also have a couple of other successor shows still in development, but I cannot tell you about those either. Sorry.”

Oops.

The prequel was co-created by Jane Goldman and author George R.R. Martin. The two were also set to executive produce along with SJ Clarkson, Daniel Zelman, James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray, and Vince Gerardis. Clarkson also directed the pilot.

HBO’s prequel to Game of Thrones has added to its cast.

The prequel has tapped five new series regulars to star opposite Naomi Watts; they are: Marquis Rodriquez, John Simm, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, and Dixie Egerickx.

Sorry.”

Oops.
