]]>Gerwig said she’s stunned, thrilled, and humbled to be serving as the president of the Cannes Film Festival jury and added she can’t wait to see what its next edition has in store.
“As a cinephile, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of movies can be… Being in the place of vulnerability, in a dark theatre filled with strangers, watching a brand-new film is my favorite place to be” said Gerwig in a statement.
The Cannes Film Festival’s official announcement described Gerwig as “a heroine of our modern times” who had shaken the “status quo”. She’s only the second female director to preside over the Cannes jury after Jane Campion in 2014 and the youngest person to do so since Sofia Loren in 1966.
Gerwig’s latest film Barbie came out earlier this year and went on to become the highest-grossing film of 2023. It recently topped the list of nominations at several major award shows, including the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards.

]]>Festival chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi announced Gerwig as the recipient of this year’s director award and described her as a masterful filmmaker. He also praised her for creating a perfect blend of comedy, emotion, and adventure with Barbie and transforming it into the cinematic experience of the year.
“Her vision is brought to life so vividly by both the script she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, and by her clear and singular collaboration with her extraordinary crafts teams, whose visuals are matched only by the outstanding performances delivered by Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and the entire cast,” said Chandi in a statement.
Gerwig is only the latest in the long line of honorary award recipients at the upcoming Palm Springs Festival, taking place from January 4-15, 2024. She’s joining Vanguard Award honoree Killers of the Flower Moon, Emma Stone (Poor Things) and Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), who are receiving acting awards, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who’ll be honored with a breakthrough performance award for The Holdovers.

In addition to Robbie and Gosling, the star-studded cast of this highly-anticipated project will also include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Nicola Coughlan, Dua Lipa, and Helen Mirren. Netflix’s official logline describes White Noise as “horrifying, lyrical and absurd, ordinary and apocalyptic”, adding it “dramatizes a contemporary American family’s attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life.”
Netflix previously dropped a teaser trailer for White Noise, but they decided to give us a closer look at the film ahead of its limited theatrical release on November 25. The full trailer does a better job fleshing out the characters, including the leading duo played by Driver and Gerwig, as they go through an airborne toxic event with their four children.
The supporting cast of White Noise includes Raffey Cassidy, André Benjamin, Alessandro Nivola, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Don Cheadle. The film will start streaming on Netflix a few weeks after its theatrical release on December 30.

Festival chief Alberto Barbera echoed his statement and described White Noise as an “original, ambitious and compelling piece of art”, that “examines our obsessions, doubts, and fear”.
The 79th Venice International Film Festival is set to take place between August 31 and September 10 with Julianne Moore serving as a jury president.

“Right in the beginning, we had a sleepover for the Barbies, which would involve playing games with Scott [Evans] and Ncuti [Gatwa]. I don’t play games usually, because I get so competitive and angry. But Scott and I were top of the game,” said Mackey.
Judging by her statement, she’s set to play one of the iterations of Barbie, and it’s believed that Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, and Hari Nef will do the same. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will portray Barbie and Ken, while the rest of the cast includes America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
Mackey also disused the experience of working with Gerwig with Empire, describing her as “invested and precise” and “so childishly delighted by what she’s doing.” Barbie marks the follow-up to her adaptation of Little Women and it’s set to be released on July 21, 2023.

Not only will the Suicide Squad actress be starring in the titular role, but she will be producing the feature as well. The Australian described the project as “Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”
And apparently, that now includes Ryan Gosling (how did they know?!)
The La La Land star is in final negotiations to portray Barbie’s love interest, Ken.
According to Deadline, Gosling had initially passed on the role, but reconsidered once his schedule opened up following a delay in the movie’s pre-production process.
Filming is scheduled to begin next year.
